5 Film Franchises That Released 2 Installments in the Same Year

Franchise movies usually take years to make. Productions are large-scale and expensive, requiring elaborate sets, special effects, and coordinating the schedules of many actors. Even when a franchise moves quickly, like Friday the 13th in the 1980s, fans still waited a year between movies. However, a few franchises broke this pattern by releasing two films in a single year. Some of these were unexpected theatrical releases, while others were made directly for home video and didn’t require long production times.

It’s common for these two movies to have been filmed one right after the other. But the real question is: were they any good?

5) The Matrix

After The Matrix became a huge cultural hit at the end of the 1990s, it was expected to have a sequel. But in 2003, the same year The Lord of the Rings finished its story, the filmmakers decided to expand The Matrix from a single, brilliant film into a three-part series.

Released in May, The Matrix Reloaded earned five times its production cost but was generally seen as inferior to the first film by both critics and fans. When The Matrix Revolutions arrived in November, the response was even more negative. However, the biggest letdown was the film’s global box office revenue of $427.3 million, significantly less than the $741.8 million earned by Reloaded.

4) The Toxic Avenger

Released in 1984, The Toxic Avenger proved that deliberately low-budget, over-the-top movies could surprisingly earn some positive attention from critics. It wasn’t a perfect success, but it did better than many expected. Although it didn’t immediately become a box office hit, it found a large audience when released on home video.

The original film gained a large fanbase in the mid-1980s, leading to two sequels in 1989. While The Toxic Avenger Part II was a bit of a letdown, The Toxic Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie concluded the trilogy with a bang, arriving less than nine months later. Fans then waited until 2000 for the fourth installment, Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV, which wasn’t as successful. However, the recent reboot, released in 2025, proved to be a hit.

3) Ginger Snaps

Released in 2000, Ginger Snaps was a groundbreaking horror film that explored feminist ideas long before Jennifer’s Body came out. While it wasn’t a big hit in theaters, it quickly gained a dedicated fanbase and is now celebrated for its themes of female empowerment.

Fans of the original film received two more installments in 2004: a sequel, Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed, which was surprisingly well-received, and a prequel. Both of these films brought back Emily Perkins and Katharine Isabelle from the first movie. Unleashed was released on January 30th, and Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning came out on July 10th.

2) X

The movie X came out on March 18, 2022. Its unexpected prequel, Pearl, followed in theaters on September 16th. However, fans had to wait until July 2024 for the sequel, MaXXXine.

Pearl was revealed around the same time as X, and while audiences were anticipating X, they didn’t realize it was only the beginning of a larger series. Surprisingly, the sequel had already been filmed.

1) The Millennium Trilogy

The Millennium series of films, adapted from Stieg Larsson’s novels, was released rapidly, mirroring the publication of the books themselves – all of which came out after Larsson’s death. However, the books were published over three years, while the Swedish films all debuted within a single year.

Despite their initial success, the Millennium series films saw diminishing returns with each release. The first film, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, earned over $104 million worldwide on a $13 million budget when it came out in February 2009. However, the second film, The Girl Who Played with Fire, released in September of the same year, only brought in $67.1 million. The final installment, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest, released in November, earned $43.5 million, indicating a continued decline in viewership.
