Prime Video’s new series has impressed even Lee Child, the author of the original Jack Reacher books. It’s a fresh take that surprised fans of the Tom Cruise movies, delivering thrilling action, a gripping story, and characters you can actually connect with. Alan Ritchson’s portrayal of Jack Reacher stays true to the book version, and Lee Child shared some interesting thoughts about the series in an interview early in 2025.
The author describes the humor in his novels as subtle and wry, often going unnoticed. He was pleased with Alan Ritchson’s portrayal of Reacher, noting that Ritchson, a careful reader of the books, successfully identified and emphasized this humor. This is evident in the show Reacher, which features several genuinely funny moments.
Reacher’s Math Is Never Wrong, But His Assessments Can Be Amusing
Beyond his physical strength, he possesses a remarkably sharp mind, capable of everything from logical deduction and spotting patterns to quick calculations. However, he’s very unemotional, which often leads to unintentionally funny moments because he doesn’t always think before he speaks – and that happens quite a lot.
Even though DEA agent Guillermo Villanueva was about to retire, he agreed to help Reacher with a risky plan. Reacher flipped a car onto its side, pretending it was a crash, with Villanueva acting as if he were still trapped inside. While Villanueva worried about the danger and reminded Reacher he was almost retired, Reacher assured him the plan was safe, explaining the target’s car would stop before hitting them.
Villanueva worried about what would happen if the other driver reacted too slowly, and Reacher responded with a surprisingly blunt question: “Do your retirement payments transfer to your wife?” It’s often hard to tell when Reacher is trying to be funny, given how direct he usually is, but this was probably his clearest attempt at a joke – though it was a very dark one.
Reacher’s Food Commentary Never Fails to Elicit a Laugh
Jack Reacher is already a very large man, standing at 6’5″, but the show still manages to make him seem even bigger. He’s much taller than almost everyone else, incredibly muscular, and has seemingly limitless energy. Interestingly, his huge appetite doesn’t quite match his physique. This was first highlighted in Season 1 when a character named Finlay asked how Reacher could eat so much and stay in such good shape. Reacher simply responded by taking a large bite of food.
Reacher often makes amusing comments about food. He enthusiastically praises beef jerky, jokingly says he’s barely started eating when faced with a huge plate of food, and isn’t particularly impressed by the much-talked-about peach pie he missed out on in the first episode.
However, Season 3 features some particularly clever observations about food. He reacts with amusement, rather than offense, to discovering his coffee came from a rather unusual source, jokingly asking not to involve the cat. Later, when the maid Annette is being bothered, he hilariously escalates her French insult into a lengthy rant about cream, mothers, and cows. His act of kindness is even rewarded with a slice of cheesecake.
Reacher Tricks a Man with a “Silencer” Made Out of Plastic
This season delves into the protagonist’s history, revealing the people he considers family. When members of his old 110th MP Special Investigations unit start being targeted and killed, he’s forced to reunite with his former team to uncover the truth. While the season has some lighthearted moments, the standout episode is Episode 6, “New York’s Finest.”
Reacher is searching for a woman named Marlo Burns, and she’s currently hiding at the home of a friend who doesn’t know he’s in danger. Reacher and his team take the man, who Reacher calls Chad, into custody and warn him about Marlo. When Chad refuses to cooperate and bring Marlo to them, Reacher creates a silencer using a plastic bottle and uses it to intimidate him.
The man, clearly scared, quickly gave in, which made Reacher laugh at how ridiculous the threat was. Chad, like a lot of people watching, was too focused on the aggressive behavior to realize a tiny piece of plastic could never actually silence a gun. Reacher even said he couldn’t believe Chad had been fooled by it.
Reacher’s Interactions with Paulie Are Almost Always Funny
As a Reacher fan, I was really intrigued when Paulie VanHoven showed up in Season 3. At 7’2″ and absolutely built, he was the first character who truly made Reacher seem…normal-sized. It was fascinating to see Reacher, usually the biggest guy in the room, finally understand what it felt like to be outmatched physically. But what I loved even more was how Reacher responded – he didn’t try to beat Paulie at his own game. Instead, he used his wit and intelligence, almost playfully, to get under Paulie’s skin. It was a brilliant move and a really smart way to handle the situation.
I could tell Reacher knew Paulie was the stronger man, but he still goaded him into an arm-wrestling match – a weird one, tailored just to mess with Paulie. Paulie, being full of himself, took the bait immediately. Reacher let him think he had the upper hand for a split second, then yanked his arm down and released it, sending Paulie’s own fist right into his face. It was a perfect setup, and honestly, kind of satisfying to watch.
A timely interruption saved him from a final confrontation, though viewers sensed something was off. The climactic fight between Reacher and Paulie was both thrilling and humorous. Paulie’s ability to withstand Reacher’s hits, survive near-drowning, and boast about his size and strength felt over-the-top. Ultimately, Paulie’s own foolishness led to his downfall.
Reacher Brilliantly and Hilariously Dismantles the Case Against Him
The season begins with Reacher enjoying a simple breakfast when he’s suddenly arrested by the police, who suspect him of murder. True to his character, he offers minimal explanation, only stating where he was at the time of the crime. Even when the police chief arrives, Reacher remains tight-lipped, adding to the intrigue surrounding his past.
Lee Child deliberately modeled his famous character, Jack Reacher, after Sherlock Holmes, so it was natural for Reacher to eventually demonstrate his own intelligence. Later, Reacher provides a detailed explanation to Finlay, clearing his own name while also pointing out weaknesses in the detective’s reasoning.
He’s particularly sharp when analyzing the lives of others. Reacher adopts a cool, detached style reminiscent of Sherlock Holmes, delivering lines that are both amazing and hard to believe, making him the most humorous character in the series.
