Okay, so it’s been over two years since Hogwarts Legacy dropped, and even though it’s still super popular, a lot of us are itching for the next one. We know a sequel is in the works, but honestly, we have no idea when it’ll actually come out. And get this – if the rumors are true, it might not even be the same kind of game! The first one was a huge open-world RPG where you just explored and did your own thing, but the sequel could be different. So, while we’re waiting for more info, a lot of us are looking for another game to scratch that magical itch.
As a huge fan, I think what everyone loves about Hogwarts Legacy is, naturally, the whole Harry Potter world – it’s just so enduring! But beyond that, it’s an amazing RPG where you actually get to be a witch or wizard and really live a life at magic school. The open world is incredible – so much to explore, and casting spells is just a blast! It’s a really cool mix of a life simulator and a role-playing game. So, if you’re like me and are looking for something similar, I’ve put together some options for you!
5. Whimel Academy

I absolutely loved getting lost in the world of Hogwarts Legacy, and if you did too, especially the idea of actually going to magic school, then you might really enjoy this game. It’s called Whimel Academy, but heads up – it’s very different gameplay-wise. Forget fighting monsters! This is a cozy visual novel where you manage your time and just get swept up in a really sweet story. If you’re looking for a wholesome magical experience without all the action and trolls, Whimel Academy might be exactly the kind of magical school life you’ve been waiting for.
In this game, you experience life as a student from start to finish. You get to pick your classes, develop your skills, and even choose who to build relationships with. The point-and-click gameplay lets you move at your own speed. While it’s not a sprawling open-world RPG, it offers a deeply engaging and unique magical story where your choices truly matter. Whimel Academy is available on Steam and recently launched its complete 1.0 version.
4. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

If you enjoy exploring vast, beautiful worlds with action, adventure, and a compelling story, Breath of the Wild is a top choice. While it leans more towards action-adventure than traditional role-playing games – it doesn’t feature character leveling or extensive customization – it still offers a fantasy setting and a similar feeling of discovery to games like Hogwarts Legacy. Many players find it satisfies the same adventurous spirit.
Unlike previous Legend of Zelda games, Breath of the Wild lets you freely explore a vast world in any order you choose. The game feels like a puzzle you solve using the items and abilities you find, and it includes relaxing elements like crafting and cooking. It strikes a balance between exciting action and a cozy atmosphere, much like Hogwarts Legacy. First released in 2017, Breath of the Wild is available on Nintendo Switch, and can be upgraded for the Switch 2.
3. Little Witch in the Woods

If you’re enjoying the magical world of Hogwarts Legacy and are bummed about the delay of Witchbrook until 2026, you might want to check out Little Witch in the Woods. It’s a story-driven game where you play as a witch exploring the forest. Similar to Hogwarts Legacy, you’ll learn spells and brew potions while discovering more of the game’s world.
Little Witch in the Woods isn’t a sprawling, open-world RPG, but it’s a charming and enchanting game. Fans of Harry Potter will notice some familiar elements, like a chatty magical hat! If you’re looking for a magical story to enjoy while waiting for games like Hogwarts Legacy 2 or Witchbrook, this could be perfect. It’s currently available on PC through Steam and was released earlier in 2024.
2. Oblivion Remastered

If you enjoyed the role-playing and fighting in Hogwarts Legacy, you might like The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. This updated version of the classic game features improved graphics and a more user-friendly interface, all within a vast and immersive world. Like exploring the grounds of Hogwarts, Oblivion Remastered offers a huge open world with tons of side quests and secrets to discover.
While not as focused on crafting and relaxing activities as some other games, Oblivion Remastered still offers some of that charm. You’ll need to collect resources to maintain your gear, and you can spend time exploring the world on horseback, dodging danger as you go. There’s a main story, but you’re free to play at your own speed – maybe even stumble into becoming a vampire and then dedicate hours to finding a cure (not that anyone here has done that, of course!). It released in 2025 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
1. Horizon: Zero Dawn

If you enjoy open-world RPGs with engaging stories and unique combat, Horizon: Zero Dawn is an excellent choice. Like Hogwarts Legacy, it offers a lot of different ways to approach battles. While the world is vast and visually stunning, it has a post-apocalyptic setting, which is quite different from the magical world of Hogwarts.
While this game features more fighting than Hogwarts Legacy, it also encourages you to explore and uncover secrets in a similar way. The changing day and night, plus the weather effects, really pull you into the game’s world. It looks and sounds fantastic, with great animation, sound, and voice acting, making it a game you should definitely try. Horizon: Zero Dawn originally came out for PlayStation 4 in 2017 and was recently updated and re-released for PlayStation 5 and PC in 2024.
