5 Goriest Horror Movies That Actually Got Released in Theaters Like 28 Years Later 2

Nia DaCosta’s 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is a compelling story driven by its characters, especially Jack O’Connell as the cult leader Jimmy Crystal and Ralph Fiennes as the compassionate Dr. Ian Kelson. The film also offers a unique perspective by showing a zombie developing awareness, similar to those seen in Day of the Dead and Land of the Dead. While character development is central, The Bone Temple doesn’t shy away from being a horror film – it’s actually quite violent, opening with a particularly gruesome scene. However, it’s not the goriest movie of the last twenty years; several widely released films have surpassed it in bloodshed. For this list, we’ve only considered movies with broader releases, excluding those like Hatchet, which played in a limited number of theaters (no more than 93).

Let’s take a look at the most shocking moments from these films, all of which were shown in cinemas. If you’re craving even more intense gore and aren’t limited to widely released movies, you might enjoy The Midnight Meat Train, I Spit on Your Grave, High Tension, Martyrs, The Deadly Spawn, and Dead Alive.

5) The Hills Have Eyes (2006)

While the remake of The Hills Have Eyes is surprisingly well-made, it’s definitely not lacking in gore – in fact, it’s quite graphic. It actually received an NC-17 rating originally, meaning it was considered too extreme for most audiences, and had to be edited to get an R rating.

Honestly, this movie is brutal. I watched a gas station attendant take his own life with a shotgun right on screen, and it just kept going from there. A dog literally ripped someone’s throat out, and they showed a pickaxe going into the head of the hill people’s leader, Papa Jupiter, after he was already burned. Other characters met pretty awful ends too – one guy got an axe to the face and a spike in the eye, and another had a flag stuck through his neck before getting chopped with an axe. I guess it’s a little better that most of this really nasty stuff happens to the bad guys, but it was still a lot to take in.

4) Saw IV

The Saw movies are generally quite graphic, but the first one isn’t as extreme. From Saw II onward, the films seemed to focus more on increasingly gory traps and shocking visuals. However, the fourth movie is definitely the most violent of the series.

Ivan shockingly gouges out his own eye, but is still brutally attacked with scythes. A crime scene photographer is instantly killed by a crossbow bolt that pierces through her head, and Rex endures painful spikes being ripped from his body to help a friend escape. Cecil suffers a horrifying fall into a cage filled with razor wire. To top it all off, Detective Eric Matthews is crushed by a pair of massive ice blocks.

3) Evil Dead

When Evil Dead was made, it famously used more fake blood than any other movie up to that point – and you can definitely tell! The third part of the film features a scene where it actually appears to rain blood.

The show doesn’t hold back on disturbing imagery. Viewers witness incredibly graphic injuries and deaths, including Jane Levy’s character self-mutilating, and several other characters meeting violent ends. Eric is brutally attacked with various objects, Natalie inflicts severe injuries on herself before ultimately being overtaken by a demonic force, and Olivia suffers a horrifying fate involving self-harm and a gruesome final act.

2) The Green Inferno

The movie The Green Inferno deals with cannibalism, meaning it’s very graphic and bloody. Because cannibalism actually happens in the real world, the film feels particularly disturbing and realistic compared to something like a monster from Evil Dead.

Eli Roth’s movie features 15 deaths, most of which are shown on screen. Some of the most disturbing include Jonah, who suffers a gruesome fate involving his eyes, tongue, and head; an activist killed by a plane propeller with visible brain trauma; and Daniel, who endures a horrific ordeal with ants consuming his broken legs and pleading for someone to end his suffering.

1) Terrifier 2 (& Terrifier 3)

The Terrifier films are incredibly violent and haven’t been rated. Surprisingly, the holiday-themed Terrifier 3 was shown in over 2,500 theaters – a very wide release, considering one scene involves a character being attacked with a chainsaw in a particularly graphic way.

Allie’s death in Terrifier 2 is arguably the most disturbing. It’s incredibly graphic, showing her face slashed open, her scalp removed, her back skinned, and an arm torn off – and that’s just the beginning. The film displays her skull, spine, and leg bones in gruesome detail. It’s truly revolting, making even the notoriously violent The Bone Temple seem tame by comparison.

Stream Terrifier 2 and Terrifier 3 on Prime Video.
