Batman is incredibly popular, and for good reason – he’s one of the most well-loved heroes ever created. He’s been the face of DC Comics for decades, appearing in countless stories across movies, TV, video games, and comics. But beyond the classic version, there are many other interesting Batmans within DC’s vast multiverse, including alternate versions of Bruce Wayne and entirely different heroes who’ve become Batman. It’s time those other versions got some recognition, too!

Most Batman fans know about alternate versions like Absolute Batman or the Batman from Flashpoint. But over the nearly 100 years DC Comics has been publishing, many other unique Dark Knights have appeared. There’s the Grim Knight, a Batman similar to the Punisher, or Bat Walker, a dinosaur who takes on the role of Batman in his world. Here are 5 incredible Batman variants you probably haven’t encountered before.

5. The Grim Knight

If you’ve ever noticed similarities between the Punisher and Batman, you’ll likely find the Grim Knight interesting. He’s from one of the many alternate realities in the Dark Multiverse, and like other evil versions of Batman introduced during the Metal storyline, he represents one of Bruce Wayne’s deepest fears. Specifically, the Grim Knight embodies Bruce’s fear of guns, exploring what he would have become if he’d chosen to use a weapon after his parents were killed. Heavily armed and definitely not a hero, the Grim Knight is a compelling character to examine.

4. Tlano, the Batman of Planet X

I’m not referring to Bruce Wayne’s dual identity. I’m talking about Tlano, the very first Batman from the planet Zur-En-Arrh. Before Grant Morrison reimagined this character, Tlano was presented as an alien who, by chance, also became Batman. Similar to the Batman we’re familiar with, Tlano used various gadgets to fight crime, including the Bat-Radia, a device capable of disrupting any electronic equipment. Tlano is a relatively obscure character, but he made a lasting impression despite only appearing once in Batman’s history.

3. The Realworlds’ Batman

Realworlds was a brief series of stories that reimagined famous DC Comics heroes in realistic settings. The first story, Realworlds: Batman, featured Charlie, a man with a disability who was a lifelong fan of the classic Adam West Batman TV show. When a friend starts heading down a dangerous path, Charlie is inspired by the 1989 Batman movie and tries to help her. Though not a Batman himself, Charlie is a kind-hearted man who strives to live by the hero’s principles.

2. Bat Walker

It’s not shocking that an endless universe offers endless possibilities, and that’s exactly what we see in Jurassic League. The comic introduces a prehistoric world guarded by dinosaur heroes, like Bat Walker. Bat Walker is an Allosaurus who became a crime fighter after losing his parents, seeking justice for them. Similar to Batman, he’s a formidable fighter, using his large size and natural weapons like claws to his advantage. He also has tools and gadgets, though they aren’t as high-tech as Batman’s, they work incredibly well for his era and environment.

1. Bat-Man of China

Following Batman’s expansion with Batman Inc., China developed its own version of the Dark Knight. After a rigorous training program, Baixi Wang became China’s Batman. While he’s physically larger and wears green instead of black, Baixi is a highly intelligent inventor, particularly skilled with electronics and robotics. He even built his own robotic sidekick, Robinbot. Though he primarily works with the Justice League of China, Batman approved of him, and Baixi recently joined Bruce Wayne’s global Batman operation in the latest Batman Incorporated comic series.
