Many fans consider Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to be one of the most faithful Marvel animated adaptations, even surpassing the Marvel Cinematic Universe in how well it brought classic Avengers storylines to life. This series, which premiered on Disney XD in 2010, uniquely focused on directly adapting existing Avengers comics for television.
The show was a tribute to the original Avengers comics by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, but it also drew inspiration from the entire history of the Avengers. It felt like seeing those classic comic book stories animated. Here are five stories from the comics that the show adapted particularly well, even better than the Marvel Cinematic Universe versions.
5) The Ballad of Beta Ray Bill

“The Ballad of Beta Ray Bill” is a strong episode from the second season of Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. While the story originally appeared in Thor comics, it’s adapted really well in the show. The episode centers around Thor’s search for the fire demon Surtur, which is interrupted when he’s unexpectedly attacked by Beta Ray Bill.
The story takes a surprising turn when Beta Ray Bill successfully lifts Mjolnir, demonstrating his worthiness. He and Thor then join forces to protect Asgard from Surtur and the Enchantress. It’s a fantastic tale, and watching Thor and Bill fight alongside Asgardian forces highlights how the Marvel Cinematic Universe has consistently overlooked Beta Ray Bill, despite his deserving a prominent role in the Thor films. This episode draws inspiration from Thor #338.
4) Nightmare in Red

The animated series Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes offered a stronger take on Red Hulk’s beginnings than the Marvel Cinematic Universe did. In the episode “Nightmare in Red,” viewers saw General Ross become Red Hulk publicly, forcing Captain America (Sam Wilson) to intervene. This version differs significantly from the comic books, not only because Ross never became president, but in many other ways as well. The MCU’s introduction of Red Hulk in Captain America: Brave New World presented a very different origin.
The identity of Red Hulk was a complete mystery in the comic books, even to the readers! Marvel kept it a secret for a great story, and when it was finally revealed to be General Ross, it was a huge surprise. In the storyline “Nightmare in Red,” Red Hulk goes after SHIELD, and while SHIELD insists it must be Bruce Banner, the Avengers suspect something else. The big reveal didn’t happen until 13 issues later in “The Deadliest Man Alive,” when Red Hulk transformed into Ross and was arrested.
3) Living Legend

During the first season of the Avengers comics, the team discovered a frozen man in the Arctic who turned out to be Captain America, a hero from World War II. While the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) covered the basic idea, the details and consequences differed significantly from the comics. In the MCU, Captain America went into the ice at the end of his first movie and was later discovered and revived in the present day, shown in a scene after the credits.
The story of the Avengers discovering and battling a disoriented, frozen Captain America – as originally told in Avengers #4 – was adapted in the Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes episode “Living Legend.” Because this was the ninth episode of the first season, the show had already established the team dynamic, allowing viewers to see how Captain America’s return pushed their relationships forward. This episode offered a more detailed look at his re-emergence compared to the time jump used in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
2) Under Siege

The Avengers suffered their most devastating defeat in a comic book arc called Under Siege, which spanned issues 270 through 277 of Avengers. In that story, the Masters of Evil systematically attacked and defeated each Avenger. The attack on Avengers Mansion was particularly brutal, even including a shocking assault on Jarvis. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has consistently featured large-scale, impactful events, much like this storyline.
I always loved how Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes actually adapted that iconic storyline! The first season had an episode called “Masters of Evil” that really captured the spirit of it. They had a fantastic team of villains – Baron Zemo leading Abomination, Crimson Dynamo, Wonder Man, Enchantress, and Executioner – and seeing them actually defeat the Avengers – Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, Thor, and Wasp – was a brilliant nod to the original comics. It was a perfect homage!
1) Secret Invasion

The animated series Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes adapted the Secret Invasion storyline, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) did too. However, the MCU’s Secret Invasion is widely considered one of the weakest Disney+ shows, as it drastically simplified a complex and beloved Marvel comic book story, losing much of what made the original so compelling.
The story unfolded over three episodes in the second season, beginning with “Prisoner of War,” where Captain Marvel was impersonated by a Skrull. This led into “Infiltration” and concluded with “Secret Invasion.” The invasion of Earth began in Wakanda, as shown in the first episode, and continued in the second episode, where the Avengers fought an army of Super-Skrulls who possessed the powers of both heroes and villains, led by their queen, Veranke. These episodes drew inspiration from the comic book series Secret Invasion issues 5-8, and Secret Invasion: Fantastic Four issues 1-3.
