5 Great Avengers Whose Stories Could Never Work In The MCU

Since its start in 2008 with Iron Man, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has centered around the Avengers. The team—originally Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawkeye in the 2012 film The Avengers—has expanded with each new Marvel movie. While many heroes have been part of the Avengers in Marvel Comics, not all of their stories would translate well to the MCU, and the team continues to grow with each release.

The comics feature a lot of fascinating Avengers, but not all of them would fit into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Some characters have stories too complicated for live-action, or they simply don’t align with the MCU’s existing storylines. Plus, the MCU films tend to focus on well-known heroes and aren’t likely to introduce lesser-known characters, even if they were great Avengers in the comics.

5) Ex Nihilo

Ex Nihilo is an unusual Marvel character. Though usually a villain, he briefly fought alongside the Avengers. As one of the Gardeners, he has the power to create life, which he once tried to use to conquer Earth with dangerous new creatures, making him an enemy of Marvel’s heroes. But when a threat emerged that spanned multiple universes, Ex Nihilo surprisingly joined their side.

Look, as much as I love the idea of Ex Nihilo on screen – and he would look amazing – I just don’t see it happening within the MCU. His powers are way too similar to Ego’s, a villain we’ve already seen, and honestly, trying to fit his whole backstory in to justify him as an Avenger would be a massive undertaking. It’s a real shame, because on paper, he’s a fantastic character and could have been a great addition to the team. It feels like we’re missing out on a potentially awesome hero.

4) Synapse (Emily Guerrero)

Synapse isn’t a hugely famous Marvel hero, but she’s a powerful and capable character who even served as an Avenger. Emily Guerrero, who has Inhuman ancestry, became Synapse and joined a team of Avengers led by Steve Rogers, known as the Uncanny Avengers. Because of her Inhuman heritage, Synapse can control brainwaves, giving her a unique form of telepathy, and she can also block other people’s powers.

Synapse brings abilities the Avengers often need, making her a potentially valuable addition to the team. However, Marvel Studios has largely distanced itself from the Inhumans TV show, where Synapse originated, making her appearance in the MCU seem improbable. Adapting her complex backstory would also require significant effort. Despite how helpful she could be, it doesn’t look like Synapse will ever join the Avengers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

3) Lionheart

I’ve always been fascinated by Captain Britain, and I really hope we get to see her story in the MCU someday. But honestly, given that she hasn’t made it to the big screen yet, I don’t think we’ll see Kelsey Leigh, as Lionheart, joining the Avengers anytime soon. It’s such a compelling story – she was chosen to become Captain Britain, carrying on the legacy of Brian Braddock, but her powers came with a real curse. It left her feeling pretty disillusioned with being a hero, which is a really interesting angle I’d love to see explored!

I’ve been following the MCU closely, and while I’m a huge fan of the Captain Britain mythos, I don’t see Lionheart joining the Avengers anytime soon. Since we haven’t even met the original Captain Britain in the MCU yet, introducing one of his successors feels distant. Plus, Lionheart’s story is so special and her relationship with her powers is really complex – it would take a lot of time and careful writing to do it justice. Honestly, it just doesn’t seem like a realistic possibility for the franchise right now, which is a shame because I think she’d be amazing!

2) Flux (Dennis Sykes)

Marvel Comics has featured two characters named Flux, but neither is the Hulk. The first was Dennis Sykes, a banker who gained the power to control any material after a toxic waste accident and a terminal diagnosis. However, Flux only appeared in the story 1 Month 2 Live and was an Avenger for a very short time.

Bringing a character with a limited lifespan into the Marvel Cinematic Universe would be really difficult. Flux is interesting because of his immense power, even though he only had it for a short time, and he used it to try and help others. However, because he’s not a well-known character and his story has such strict limitations, fitting him into the MCU as an Avenger feels unlikely.

1) Conan the Barbarian

As a huge Marvel fan, it really bugs me that we’ve never seen Conan the Barbarian join the MCU! The character originally came from Robert E. Howard’s stories way back in 1932, and he was a regular in Marvel comics from 1970 to 1993. I always loved that he was part of the Savage Avengers – it was cool to see something a little different from the usual sci-fi stuff Marvel does, with more swords and magic!

Even though Conan would be a strong addition to the Avengers, bringing his story to the Marvel Cinematic Universe is unlikely. This is mainly because Marvel doesn’t currently own the rights to the character, which creates significant obstacles. It’s unfortunate, as Conan the Barbarian is a fantastic and dynamic character, but a spot in the MCU doesn’t seem feasible for him.
