The DC Universe is famous for having a huge number of sidekicks and young heroes. Everyone knows the main heroes, like Robin and Kid Flash. However, beyond those well-known characters, there are many other sidekicks in the DC Universe. In fact, Batman has had several junior partners, and not all of them have received the same level of recognition as the original Boy Wonder.
Introducing sidekicks can be difficult. A poor introduction can make fans dislike them from the start, preventing them from feeling like a natural part of the story – we saw this with Bluebird, also known as Harper Row. Similarly, villainous sidekicks who don’t connect with their partners often fade into obscurity, like Gaggy, the Joker’s former helper. However, just because some sidekicks struggled to become popular doesn’t mean they weren’t compelling characters. Keep reading to learn about 5 forgotten DC sidekicks and discover what made them great.
5. Bluebird

I distinctly remember when Harper Row was first introduced. She was a relatively small character appearing early in the New 52 era, and DC even labeled her a “fan-favorite,” though that didn’t quite take off. Still, Harper proved to be a helpful ally to Batman, mostly because of her skills with electrical engineering, which allowed her to create some unexpected and useful gadgets. While she doesn’t appear often now, despite initial plans to make her Batman’s new sidekick, Bluebird ended up being a welcome addition to the Bat-Family.
4. The Lieutenant Marvels

I’ve always been a huge Captain Marvel (or just Captain, as he’s known now!) fan, and one of the things I find really neat is the story of his Lieutenants. For a while, Captain Marvel wasn’t alone – he had a team of guys who shared his name, and he actually gave them his powers using his magic to save their lives! These Lieutenant Marvels were incredibly loyal, fighting right alongside Captain Marvel and his other friends like Uncle Dudley and Tawky Tawny. It’s been a while since we’ve seen them in the main stories, but the idea of the Captain having a dedicated team always felt really awesome to me.
3. Gaggy Gagsworthy

Even villains need helpers, and before Harley Quinn, the Joker had a sidekick named Gaggy. Gaggy was a small-time criminal who basically acted as the Joker’s personal comedian. As the Joker became more serious and modern, he stopped using Gaggy and moved away from that older style. Despite being left behind, Gaggy remains incredibly loyal to the Joker and has a few surprises up his sleeve – he’s even a convincing Joker impersonator! You don’t see Gaggy much anymore, but he’s a fascinating piece of the Joker’s history.
2. Flamebird

Most comic fans know Nightwing’s name comes from a story in Kryptonian mythology. In that story, Nightwing was partnered with Flamebird, a hero identity used by Bette Kane, who is Batwoman (Kate Kane)’s cousin. Interestingly, Nightwing and Flamebird didn’t always work well together, but Bette had a great relationship with Kate, who helped her become an even stronger hero. Recently, DC Comics hasn’t featured Flamebird much, but with a new Batwoman comic series starting, hopefully we’ll see more of her in the future.
1. Snapper Carr

Snapper Carr is a unique and somewhat obscure figure among superhero sidekicks. He doesn’t have any superpowers and isn’t connected to any specific hero, but he played a surprisingly important role in the Justice League’s first battle against Starro, actually helping them win. Famous for his signature snapping and his unwavering devotion to the League, Snapper has acted as their unofficial spokesperson for a long time. While he’s not as well-known as sidekicks like Robin or Kid Flash, he’s a dedicated fan who always eagerly champions the Justice League.
