Even though special effects have improved and tastes have changed – making some older shows feel dated – sci-fi continues to be a regular part of what networks offer. Many of the best sci-fi shows today are inventive, mixing science fiction with genres like thrillers, mysteries, horror, or drama. Others fully commit to epic space adventures, captivating audiences with detailed and imaginative worlds.

Lately, a lot of fantastic science fiction shows have flown under the radar. For every hit like Severance or Westworld, there are several others that don’t get the attention they deserve, meaning some truly excellent TV is being overlooked. The current TV landscape is so competitive that many incredible sci-fi shows are quickly forgotten.

5) Counterpart (Starz, 2017-2019)

Many consider Counterpart to be one of the best science fiction shows of the past few years, but it doesn’t get the attention it deserves. The show stars J.K. Despite being one of the best sci-fi shows in recent years, it somehow hasn’t gotten the recognition it deserves.

4) Colony (USA Network, 2016-2018)

It’s become common for good science fiction TV shows to end too soon, and Colony is one that doesn’t get much attention. The show takes place in the near future in Los Angeles, where humanity is controlled by a strict government called the Transitional Authority, which works for a dominant alien race. While Colony slowly uncovered details about these alien rulers, it was unfortunately cancelled after only two seasons.

Colony is a strong example of classic science fiction, cleverly using its futuristic setting to explore political and social themes. It’s a unique and engaging show that immediately grabs your attention, but unfortunately, it hasn’t received much recognition. Though it’s a well-made sci-fi series from the last ten years, its brief run on television means it hasn’t had a significant impact on the genre, despite its compelling story.

3) Fortitude (Sky Atlantic, 2015-2018)

I have to say, when I first started watching Fortitude, I didn’t think of it as science fiction at all! It seemed like a really gripping thriller set in this isolated town in the Arctic. But as the story went on, the sci-fi elements started creeping in, and it became clear why it’s labeled that way. It’s a really unique show – it blends thriller, drama, horror, and sci-fi so well, and it really packs a punch. It’s a fantastic story!

Featuring acclaimed actors like Stanley Tucci, Michael Gambon, and Christopher Eccleston, Fortitude immediately draws you in with a captivating story. The show maintains a consistently unsettling and dreamlike mood throughout its three seasons, making it truly unforgettable. Despite its high quality, it remains an underappreciated sci-fi series.

2) Killjoys (CTV Sci-Fi & Syfy, 2015-2019)

Though it had some mainstream appeal, Killjoys is mostly remembered as a beloved sci-fi show that didn’t get enough recognition. The series, starring Hannah John-Kamen, Aaron Ashmore, and Luke Macfarlane, centers on three bounty hunters operating in a star system called the Quad. With 50 episodes across five seasons, Killjoys had a solid run, even if it didn’t become a huge hit.

What truly sets Killjoys apart is its refreshing simplicity. It’s a fun, fast-paced sci-fi show that focuses on action and entertainment, thanks to its engaging and relatable characters. Despite being thoroughly enjoyable, Killjoys surprisingly doesn’t get the recognition it deserves, even among sci-fi fans.

1) Travelers (Netflix, 2016-2018)

Many cancelled sci-fi shows seem to deserve another chance, but Travelers truly did. The show, which ended after three seasons, had a lot of promise and a fascinating story. It centered around agents from a ruined future who could travel back in time by taking over the minds of people in the past, all to try and save humanity from disaster.

With a strong cast, a fresh take on time travel, and a compelling central mystery, Travelers was a standout sci-fi series. Despite its quality, it didn’t receive the attention it deserved, potentially leading to its cancellation. It remains one of the most fascinating recent sci-fi shows that’s largely flown under the radar.
