Lots of exciting new RPGs are coming out this year, like Crimson Desert and the Fable remake. However, even with all these new releases, it’s tough to beat the classic RPGs. Whether it’s nostalgia or just fantastic gameplay, the 2000s gave us some truly unforgettable games. But, some older games don’t age well, making it hard to decide which classics are still worth playing today.
I think the 2000s and 2010s were the best time for gaming. I was skilled enough to enjoy games, but didn’t have many adult responsibilities yet. It seems a lot of people feel the same way, judging by all the remakes and reboots we’re seeing. Luckily, some older games are still fantastic, and fans can revisit them even if the graphics and gameplay aren’t as modern. Here are 5 RPGs from the 2000s that are still worth playing if you can find them.
5)Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines

The first Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines was released in 2004. Although it had a rocky start, dedicated fans and updates have turned it into a beloved classic. That’s why there was so much excitement for Bloodlines 2 when it came out last year.
In this action role-playing game, you become a vampire in the modern world. It’s based on the popular tabletop RPG, offering complex gameplay and a realistic take on vampire life. With several different vampire clans and a captivating story, Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines remains a great game to play even in 2026. It’s also easy to get, as you can download it from Steam, making it accessible over a decade after its release.
4)The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind

Released in 2002, Morrowind is a classic Elder Scrolls game that came before Skyrim and its more modern changes. It’s still beloved by longtime fans of the series. While Morrowind’s graphics and gameplay feel quite different from newer Elder Scrolls games, many players believe it offers an unmatched depth of story and allows for incredible player freedom.
In Morrowind, you play as a prisoner who’s just been released, and quickly gets caught up in a prophecy that claims you might be a legendary hero. The game then throws increasingly difficult challenges your way as you try to save the world. Morrowind truly makes you feel like you’re part of the story, and you’ll need to pay attention to figure out what to do next. Even though it’s an older game and feels a little rough around the edges, it’s definitely worth revisiting. You can still find the Game of the Year Edition on Steam, and while rumors of a remake persist, the original remains a classic.
3) Icewind Dale

Originally released for computers in 2000, this Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game received a remastered version in 2014, bringing it to modern consoles. It was created by the renowned Black Isle Studios, the team behind the early Baldur’s Gate games – including my personal favorite, Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance. However, for a lot of players, Icewind Dale remains the definitive D&D game to replay from that era.
Icewind Dale is a fan favorite thanks to its incredibly immersive world and overall feel. Many players actually think its combat and exploration are better than those in the original Baldur’s Gate games. While it doesn’t have the memorable characters found in later Dungeons & Dragons RPGs, its straightforward story and excellent combat still make it a great game to play. You can find an Enhanced Edition on Steam, which includes extra content and updated features.
2) Final Fantasy X

I first experienced the Final Fantasy series with Final Fantasy 10 when it came out in 2001. While Final Fantasy 7 often gets attention for its remake, this JRPG from Square Enix is one of the best role-playing games of the 2000s. It doesn’t need a complete remake because it still plays great, and the recent remaster has only improved it.
Final Fantasy 10 was a turning point for the series, introducing a new battle system and fully 3D worlds. However, what truly makes the game stand out even today is its compelling story and memorable characters. While it offers strong combat, interesting puzzles, and fun side activities, it’s the captivating narrative that really draws you in and keeps you hooked. I recently revisited the game and was reminded why it remains a worthwhile experience even now.
1)Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

If you ask gamers which role-playing game from the 2000s is still great to play, KOTOR is almost always mentioned. Originally released in 2003 only for Xbox, it’s now available on other systems. KOTOR uses the rules from the Star Wars Roleplaying game to create a deeply engaging computer role-playing experience that players continue to love, even 23 years later.
This game tells a new story within the Star Wars universe, featuring strong writing and characters you’ll care about. Fans appreciate how true it stays to the original Star Wars feel, but it also lets you create and play as your own unique character. Whether you’re a huge Star Wars enthusiast or simply enjoy a good sci-fi role-playing game, Knights of the Old Republic remains a great choice. Plus, it’s now available on many modern platforms, making it easy to pick up and play.
