While the core ingredients for a great sci-fi story have been used in many forms of media, television continues to be a fantastic place to find examples of why this genre remains so beloved.

As a sci-fi fanatic, I’ve seen a lot of shows come and go, and honestly, most don’t stick with me. But there are these rare gems – truly great shows – that for some reason, I just can’t bring myself to rewatch. I can appreciate how good they were the first time, but there’s just no pull to go back for another viewing.

This technology essentially allows some people to live forever, dramatically changing society. While the show’s two seasons were well-received by critics and science fiction enthusiasts for its exciting, gritty style, Netflix surprisingly cancelled it, disappointing viewers worldwide.

Okay, let me tell you, Altered Carbon is a sci-fi show that really stuck with me – and not in a good way. The story was genuinely captivating, and the world they built was incredibly detailed, but honestly, once you finish it, you’ll probably never revisit it. It was cancelled far too soon, leaving so much potential untapped. As a sci-fi fan, investing hours into something that ends so abruptly and unsatisfactorily? I just don’t think I can bring myself to do it again, and I doubt many others will either.

4) Black Mirror

Black Mirror is a hugely popular science fiction series known for its standalone episodes. Each story explores how new technologies, while seemingly futuristic, could have unsettling and believable consequences. The show often feels like a modern cautionary tale, and is famous for its surprising and unexpected turns.

The surprising plot twists in Black Mirror are a major reason people love – or avoid – the show. Once an episode reveals its dark ending, it’s hard to forget, making rewatching the entire series less appealing. While fans might revisit a favorite episode now and then, knowing all the twists diminishes the impact of a full rewatch.

While the initial season remains enjoyable, the lack of a proper conclusion diminishes its impact. It’s often remembered as one of the best sci-fi shows to last only one season, but the frustrating lack of closure discourages new viewers and prevents existing fans from rewatching it.

2) Firefly

Many consider Firefly the most famously cancelled sci-fi show ever. It quickly gained a dedicated following with its distinctive blend of space adventure and western themes, creating a detailed and promising universe with plenty of storytelling potential. Sadly, the show was cancelled after only 14 episodes, ending its run far too soon.

Despite continuing beyond its initial cancellation through a movie and comic books, the brief lifespan of Firefly remains a significant disappointment. The show is fantastic, but it’s difficult to rewatch knowing we never got the full story it deserved. It’s a shame, given how good it was during its limited time on television.

Many consider Mr. Robot to be one of Rami Malek’s strongest roles. The show is a science fiction series that focuses more on suspense and psychological thrills than typical sci-fi themes. Throughout its four seasons, Mr. Robot developed a complex and layered story, focusing on its characters and their common objective. The show’s final episodes are particularly challenging and thought-provoking, as all the major mysteries are revealed simultaneously. The intricate conclusion is considered one of the most complex endings in science fiction, which can make the series intimidating to watch again. Although the show is well-made, many viewers feel they don’t need to rewatch Mr. Robot after seeing the final reveal.
