With a rich and diverse collection similar to Netflix’s, it can sometimes be challenging to spot high-quality thrillers amidst the abundance. This genre, known for its versatility, often intertwines with various other film types such as crime, action, horror, or even romance, while maintaining an undercurrent of tension and suspense. Fortunately, Netflix boasts a robust selection in every sub-category of thriller, ranging from their original productions to timeless classics. This means that your next movie night is guaranteed to deliver edge-of-your-seat moments, regardless of the title you select. Here are our top five recommendations for thrilling Netflix titles:
1. “The Old Guard” – a supernatural action-thriller about a group of immortal mercenaries.
2. “Uncut Gems” – a crime thriller following a gambling addict and desperate diamond dealer.
3. “Gerald’s Game” – a psychological horror-thriller based on Stephen King’s novel.
4. “The Innocents” – a chilling period drama about a group of orphaned children with strange powers.
5. “The Perfection” – a dark and twisted thriller about a prodigious cellist seeking revenge on her former mentor.
5) Fair Play
Titled “Fair Play,” this captivating, sensual thriller pairs Alden Ehrenreich from “Solo: A Star Wars Story” with Phoebe Dynevor of “Bridgerton.” They play Luke and Emily, a duo navigating the ruthless landscape of Manhattan finance while secretly involved. Their engagement arrives at the same time as Emily’s promotion over Luke at their relentlessly competitive firm, posing a significant risk not just to their relationship, but also their professional standing.
“Fair Play,” directed by Chloe Domont in her feature film debut, offers a riveting exploration of power and gender dynamics within corporate environments and intimate relationships. It delves into the paradox of a world that advocates for gender equality, yet often falls short on its promises.
4) Carry-On
If you haven’t seen it yet, consider Netflix’s all-time hit film “Carry-On” as your next watch. This action thriller transforms the seemingly dull process of airport security into an engaging cinematic adventure. In this movie, Taron Egerton portrays a TSA agent who gets caught up in a Christmas Eve blackmail scheme by Jason Bateman’s character, a Traveler who is transporting a dangerous Russian chemical weapon across borders.
As a fan, I can’t help but rave about “Carry-On,” a pulse-pounding action thriller that brings together two of my favorite actors in an exhilarating game of cat and mouse. With its Christmas backdrop, it evokes the spirit of classic movies like “Die Hard.” Given its current status as the third most-watched movie on the platform, I wouldn’t be surprised if viewers start making “Carry-On” a yearly tradition, just like they did with the latter.
3) The Departed
If crime thrillers are your preference, there’s hardly anything superior than “The Departed.” This legendary film is directed by Martin Scorsese and features an impressive cast in a struggle between the South Boston police department and Irish American organized crime. Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio portray young officers, but they work on opposite sides of the law. One aims to dismantle crime boss Frank Costello (played by Jack Nicholson), while the other is an informant for Costello’s syndicate within the police force. The suspense in “The Departed” is palpable throughout as the two adversaries uncover each other and try to expose one another, and the talented supporting cast that includes Martin Sheen, Mark Wahlberg, and Vera Farmiga makes this movie a must-see for every thriller enthusiast.
2) Red Eye
In the movie titled “Red Eye,” a flight from Dallas to Miami transforms into an intense battle for life against frightening odds. The characters, played by Rachel McAdams as Lisa, a hotel manager, and Cillian Murphy as Jack Rippner, a fellow traveler, form a relationship reminiscent of romantic comedies during their journey. However, things take a drastic turn when Jack discloses his intention to assassinate the Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security in the U.S., threatening to harm Lisa’s father if she intervenes.
The skilled horror director Wes Craven expertly utilizes the confined and almost oppressively tight setting of the plane in “Red Eye” to escalate the movie’s suspense and tension. Furthermore, Cillian Murphy’s transformation from an appealing character to a chilling and unsettling presence on screen is truly captivating to watch.
1) Jaws
Few movies have managed to evoke such a chilling sense of fear like “Jaws” did half a century ago. In one of his initial cinematic masterpieces, Steven Spielberg transformed Peter Benchley’s novel about a terrifying shark terrorizing a coastal town into an indelible horror-thriller that made us all think twice before taking a leisurely swim in the ocean. Despite the mayor of Amity Island’s shortsightedness in keeping the beaches open following a presumed shark attack, the town’s police chief, along with a marine biologist and an experienced shark hunter, embark on a quest to eliminate the menace. Besides Spielberg’s exceptional narrative, “Jaws” builds suspense through John Williams’s iconic, ominous music.
