5 Great Thrillers You Didn’t Know Were Streaming on Tubi

I’ve been really impressed with how much Tubi has grown! They’ve added so many different kinds of movies and TV shows over the past few years. Seriously, if you browse their selection now, you’ll find just about anything – from big-budget blockbusters like Furious 7, Angel Has Fallen and exciting action adventures like The Mummy, Knight and Day, to scary horror films such as Sinister, Scary Stories to tell in the Dark, and hilarious comedies like Idiocracy, Monty Python and the Holy Grail. They even have a great selection of superhero movies, including Watchmen and Hellboy! Today, I want to share some of my favorite thrillers on Tubi because they really have a fantastic selection in that genre. That’s why I’m highlighting 5 thrillers you might not have seen yet, so you can check them out right now before they disappear!

5. Alone

Let’s begin with a newer movie that takes classic thriller ideas and makes them its own: Alone. This film, directed by John Hyams, centers around Jessica (played by Jules Willcox), who is kidnapped and left stranded in the wilderness. After managing to escape, she must struggle to survive, evading her dangerous captor. She’ll not only have to battle the harsh environment while staying one step ahead, but also cleverly use the wilderness to fight back.

The film immediately builds a creepy and unsettling feeling when Jessica meets her troubled kidnapper, and the suspense just keeps increasing as the story unfolds. Although similar stories exist, this version feels particularly raw and isolating – more so than others – and it’s nicely contrasted by Marc Menchaca’s unusual performance, resulting in something genuinely different.

4. Red Lights

Now, let’s talk about a 2012 movie featuring a lot of well-known actors, though it might have flown under the radar. The film is Red Lights, directed by Rodrigo Cortés, and centers around Tom Buckley (Cillian Murphy), a researcher who investigates paranormal claims. Buckley teams up with his colleague, Margaret Matheson (Sigourney Weaver), to expose fake psychics and disprove supernatural beliefs, but there’s one individual they should definitely avoid.

The story centers around Simon Silver (Robert De Niro), a well-known blind psychic who returns to the spotlight for a specific occasion. Investigating Silver is a complex undertaking, and this is where the film introduces several unexpected twists and turns, making you wonder if supernatural forces are involved. The combined talents of Murphy, Weaver, and De Niro significantly increase the tension and drama, ultimately leading to a surprising and unpredictable climax. While it unfolds at a deliberate pace, this film is well worth your time and attention.

3. Donnie Darko

Next up on our list is a beloved film from 2001: Donnie Darko, directed by Richard Kelly. It starred Jake Gyllenhaal and featured a memorable, unsettling rabbit with a mask. The movie explored familiar thriller themes, but it also delved into complex ideas like time travel and the potential collapse of multiple universes – it was, simply put, incredibly ambitious.

Once we meet Donnie, we discover he’s haunted by visions of a creepy rabbit with a mask, a figure he calls Frank. Throughout the movie, Frank manipulates Donnie into doing terrible things, and Donnie only begins to understand the consequences as the story progresses. The film constantly makes you wonder if Donnie is mentally stable, but the ending – especially the final scenes – completely changes your perspective, leaving you both confused and mesmerized.

Although Donnie Darko might not appeal to all viewers, it’s a captivating film that will likely keep you engrossed and eager to uncover its mysteries. You’ll probably find yourself watching intently until you understand what happens.

2. We Need to Talk About Kevin

Let’s turn to a more unsettling and heartbreaking film now: We Need To Talk About Kevin, directed by Lynne Ramsay. This 2011 movie stars Tilda Swinton and John C. Reilly as the parents of a boy named Kevin. Ezra Miller plays the older version of Kevin, letting the audience witness his development and how he spirals into increasingly troubling behavior.

Throughout the film, the central mystery is what caused Kevin to end up the way he did, and it offers some thought-provoking ideas about this. Parents may find this movie particularly challenging, as it examines the consequences of a weak family connection and inconsistent discipline. However, it also raises a bigger question: does any of that even matter? Perhaps Kevin was destined for a certain path, no matter how he was raised.

This idea is central to what is, at its heart, a very sad and unsettling narrative. It’s the kind of film that will probably stay with you long after the credits roll.

1. Snowpiercer

Let’s talk about a fantastic Thriller available on Tubi: the 2013 movie Snowpiercer. Director Bong Joon-ho and Chris Evans teamed up to create a gripping story set on a train that’s constantly in motion. This is because a new ice age has frozen the Earth, and the train is humanity’s last hope for survival in a dystopian world.

Snowpiercer doesn’t hide its connections to real-world issues like class divisions, how societies function, child labor, and the consequences of making choices based on fear – and the movie reveals these connections in surprising ways. Beyond these larger themes, it’s a gripping story about fighting to survive and rising up against oppression, brought to life with stunning visuals and memorable scenes that keep you engaged throughout the entire film.

Although the story concludes on a somewhat somber note, there’s still a glimmer of hope, and it could actually be one of the more optimistic endings within this collection. It’s not entirely without promise.
