Visual novels have been around since the beginning of video games, and they’ve evolved quite a bit over the years. Developers are now using advanced technology to create more complex and interesting experiences. While popular titles like Ace Attorney, Doki Doki Literature Club, Zero Escape, and Danganronpa are well-known, there are many other excellent visual novels out there. Below are some hidden gems that deserve your attention, even if they haven’t received as much recognition.

5) The House in Fata Morgana

Many visual novel enthusiasts remember The House in Fata Morgana, which first came out in Japan in 2012. While it took four years for the game to be released internationally, it’s now considered one of the best visual novels of the 2010s. Despite its critical acclaim, it hasn’t achieved widespread popularity, with around 300,000 copies sold by 2025.

It’s too bad you might miss out on Fata Morgana, a really engaging story that takes place in a single mansion, but across four different time periods. You’ll gradually uncover the history of the people who lived there, all while learning about your own character – a ghost who has no memory of their past life.

4) Growing Up

Released in 2021, Growing Up is a newer game that offers a unique experience. Developed by Vile Monarch, it’s a life simulation blended with a visual novel, starting with your character as a young child and following them through school and into adulthood.

If you’re looking for a relaxed and nostalgic game experience reminiscent of the 1990s, Growing Up is a great option. The game offers tons of choices, giving it high replayability. You’ll develop skills, find different jobs, and explore relationships. While it’s not an epic quest, it’s a well-made life simulation perfect for a laid-back gaming session.

3) Raging Loop

Unlike most horror games, Raging Loop throws you into a terrifying psychological mystery in a remote Japanese village. Once you arrive, a thick fog descends, trapping everyone inside. The game quickly becomes a deadly version of Werewolf, where the creatures aren’t just part of the game – they’re real and hunting you.

You have a unique ability to identify the werewolves. Your character can rewind time after someone dies, giving you a chance to learn from what happened and make different choices. Some players haven’t been happy with how the story ends, but most agree the journey itself is a lot of fun.

2) Juniper’s Knot

Juniper’s Knot is a brief game – you can finish it in under 30 minutes – but it’s surprisingly rich in story. This 2012 visual novel from Dischan Media is a good starting point for anyone new to the genre, as it doesn’t require a large time commitment to experience the complete story.

This game tells the story of a boy and a demoness, but it’s best experienced without knowing too much. It’s a short experience – only about 30 minutes long – and we don’t want to give away any surprises. Beyond the intriguing story, you can expect beautiful artwork and a well-made soundtrack. Plus, it’s completely free on Steam, making it an easy game to recommend!

1) Gnosia

The game Gnosia was first released in Japan on the Vita in June 2019. Interestingly, Sony had already stopped making the Vita console in March 2019, meaning the game launched on a system that was being discontinued. While Gnosia eventually became available on other platforms, this initial release made it largely unknown to many players.

It’s unfortunate this sci-fi visual novel doesn’t get the attention it deserves. It’s a really unique adventure that blends social deduction with time loops. You’ll need to use your intelligence to figure out who among the ship’s crew are the alien-like Gnosia and freeze them. The story is complex and compelling, making it one of the best visual novels released in the last ten years.

It’s great to see Gnosia gaining popularity with its release on new platforms! An anime adaptation even came out in 2025. Hopefully, this success means we’ll see another game from Petit Depotto in this universe soon, giving fans more of the sci-fi world they love.
