5 Great Wolverine Moments That Defined The ‘20s (So Far)

Wolverine experienced a resurgence after returning in the 2019 story Return of Wolverine. Things quickly improved as the X-Men entered the Krakoa Era, and in 2020, he starred in a new ongoing series, Wolverine (Vol. 7), created by Benjamin Percy and artists Adam Kubert and Viktor Bogdanovic. This series became a highlight of the Krakoa Era, and Logan also rejoined the X-Force team. In 2022, he was central to the event books X Lives of Wolverine and X Deaths of Wolverine, and his series consistently remained a top seller. 2024 marked Wolverine’s 50th anniversary, and he’s had a significant role in the Uncanny X-Men following its “From the Ashes” relaunch. His solo titles continued with the somewhat inconsistent Wolverine (Vol. 8) and the popular, though critically mixed, Ultimate Wolverine.

The 2020s haven’t been perfect for Wolverine, especially with some recent storylines, but there have still been plenty of highlights. We’ve seen some fantastic Wolverine comics – like Wolverine: Patch, which was almost on this list – and here are five of the best moments from the decade. Hopefully, things will only improve for the character going forward.

5) Chris Claremont’s Return to Wolverine

Chris Claremont revitalized the X-Men and launched Wolverine to stardom in the 1980s. To celebrate Wolverine’s 50th anniversary in 2024, Marvel brought Claremont back to write several new miniseries, including Wolverine: Madripoor Knights, a continuation of the beloved Uncanny X-Men #268, and Wolverine: Deep Cut. Claremont is considered one of the best writers to ever tackle the Wolverine character, and his recent work between 2024 and 2025 is among the best the character has seen in the last six years. If you’re a Wolverine fan, these stories are well worth checking out.

4) Wolverine’s Return to X-Force

The sixth volume of X-Force began in late 2019, with the majority of its 50 issues published throughout the 2020s. Created by Benjamin Percy, Joshua Cassara, Robert Gill, GUR-eFX, and other artists, this iteration of X-Force was the most intense yet, functioning as a covert intelligence agency for Krakoa. Beast led the team strategically, while Wolverine took charge in the field. While not solely focused on Wolverine, the series significantly developed his character over the past six years, delivering exciting action and contributing to a high point of the Krakoa Era for him.

3) Wolverine vs. Beast

The comic series X-Force (Vol. 6) depicted a gradual change in Beast, who became convinced that protecting Krakoa justified any action, no matter how terrible. This led him to attempt to kill Wolverine and then resurrect him as a mind-controlled assassin. Eventually, Wolverine broke free, resulting in a fantastic conflict between the two. Their fight, spanning issues #26-35 of Wolverine (Vol. 7), was a standout moment for the X-Men and has become a significant part of the team’s history.

2) “Sabretooth War”

Fans hadn’t seen a showdown between Wolverine and Sabretooth in about ten years, but that changed with the “Sabretooth War” storyline. This ten-issue arc marked the exciting conclusion of writer Benjamin Percy’s work on the character, collaborating with Victor LaValle (who previously worked on Sabretooth/Sabretooth and the Exiles) and artists Geoff Shaw and Cory Smith. The story features Logan battling an army of Sabretooths from across the multiverse, determined to finally defeat his longtime enemy. Many consider it the best Wolverine story ever – a truly epic tale filled with intense action, memorable characters, and fantastic writing, including some impressively brutal moments.

1) Wolverine: Revenge

In 2024, a highly anticipated Wolverine series arrived, crafted by two of the comic world’s most popular creators. Wolverine: Revenge, a five-issue story by Jonathan Hickman and Greg Capullo, presents an alternate Earth where Magneto’s death triggers an electromagnetic pulse that collapses civilization. Only Russia survives with a functioning reactor, protected by a new Brotherhood of Mutants – Mastermind, Colossus, Sabretooth, Omega Red, and Deadpool. Logan is tasked with obtaining their technology, but the mission goes disastrously wrong, setting him on a path of vengeance. Hickman clearly has a deep appreciation for Wolverine, and this story showcases it beautifully. Capullo’s stunning artwork perfectly complements the intense action, making this one of the character’s most exciting moments in years – and a story that feels destined to become a modern classic.
