A Harry Potter TV series actually has a lot of potential. The movies, while good, simply couldn’t include everything from the books – many fascinating characters and storylines had to be left out. A TV show, with about six extra hours per season, could really do the Wizarding World justice. However, HBO Max still faces some challenges. It’s crucial that the show has a distinct visual style, different from the films. They’re also already working on casting, which is a big task.
The team making the new Harry Potter series is searching for actors to play all the beloved characters. While some well-known actors like John Lithgow are involved, most of the cast are up-and-coming performers hoping to gain recognition. They’ll really need to deliver outstanding performances to make a lasting impression. Here are five Harry Potter characters that will be particularly challenging to recast.
5) Bellatrix Lestrange

Everyone thinks Voldemort is the most evil wizard, but Bellatrix Lestrange actually seems to enjoy causing pain far more. In the Harry Potter films, Helena Bonham Carter perfectly captures Bellatrix’s unhinged nature, like when she excitedly boasts about killing Sirius Black while running through the Ministry of Magic. It’s difficult to picture another actor playing Bellatrix as well, because Carter truly embodies the character in a rare and captivating way.
4) Sirius Black

I’m so excited to see Gary Oldman as Sirius Black! He’s an incredible actor, and this role in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban really lets him show off everything he can do. At first, Sirius seems like a total threat to Harry, a really dangerous escaped prisoner. But then, you see this completely different side of him – a warm, protective godfather who’d do anything for his family. Honestly, Sirius is one of Oldman’s best performances, even with all the amazing roles he’s played. It’s going to be tough for HBO Max to find someone who can bring that same magic to the character.
3) Dolores Umbridge

The Harry Potter films consistently feature compelling villains, and Dolores Umbridge in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is a prime example. She arrives at Hogwarts determined to control the students, but her strict methods are actually quite cruel, punishing anyone who challenges her. Imelda Staunton delivers a fantastic performance, creating a truly unsettling character – her laugh is particularly memorable and menacing. It takes a special actor to pull off a role like that, and especially to wear that pink suit!
2) Mad-Eye Moody

Playing Mad-Eye Moody is a particularly challenging role because it’s really two characters in one. In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the character is actually Barty Crouch Jr. disguised as the Auror, sent to spy on Hogwarts. Brendan Gleeson had to portray this new, intensely observant teacher who is overly interested in Harry and willing to harm others to monitor him. Once the deception is revealed, Gleeson gets to tone down the performance slightly, but Mad-Eye remains a very volatile character.
1) Voldemort

No one else quite measures up to the challenge of playing Voldemort. Although Voldemort doesn’t have a large part in the first Harry Potter book, which the first season of the HBO Max show will adapt, the role hasn’t been cast yet. It seems the show is intentionally taking its time, likely because Ralph Fiennes’ portrayal of Voldemort was so memorable. The producers know they need to find an actor who can truly embody the villain, so they’re being very careful in their search.
