What’s so great about comic book characters is their amazing range – they can explore really serious themes about what it means to be human, or just be pure, lighthearted fun. But what really excites me is when two characters combine to become something entirely new, inheriting the powers of both originals. It’s a fantastic way to celebrate what makes each character special and imagine the possibilities when their abilities are mixed together.
I’m a big fan of when heroes combine their powers, and it’s happened a lot in Marvel and DC comics. Today, I want to highlight five of the most awesome hero fusions that deserve to appear more often. Some of these combinations are recurring characters who are always welcome, while others were one-time events that had a lot of potential. Either way, I think they’re all worth seeing more of. Let’s take a look at these powerful combinations!
5) Superman/Batman

The combined form of Batman and Superman first appeared in Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #4. It happened when they removed a mind-controlled Green Lantern’s power ring, accidentally merging into one being. This new hero possesses Batman’s skills, Superman’s powers, and the abilities of a Green Lantern – making him incredibly powerful! Given that Batman and Superman are already legendary heroes, combining them with the limitless potential of the Power Ring is a dream come true for fans. This fusion has appeared a few times since its debut and has clearly made a strong impact on both readers and those who create the stories.
4) Iron Hammer (Iron Man/Thor)

As a huge cinema fan, I was completely blown away by the introduction of Stark Odinson in Infinity Wars #3. The way Gamora used the Infinity Stones to mess with reality, pairing souls together, was brilliant. It created this fascinating character – basically, the arrogant son of Howard Odin, who was sent to Earth to learn some humility. It’s such a clever mix of Thor’s mythology and Tony Stark’s grounded, human struggles, all centered around the idea of learning to be humble. The way their backstories actually fit together so seamlessly is incredible. And the design of Siguard Stark – a disabled man hidden beneath godly armor – is just fantastic, both visually and thematically. Honestly, he’s the perfect character to lead a ‘What If?’ story, and I’m really excited to see where it goes.
3) Speed Demon (The Flash/Etrigan/Ghost Rider)

The character Speed Demon first appeared during the Marvel and DC crossover event, Amalgam. He came about when Blaze Allen, after losing his wife Iris, merged with the demon Etrigan to find peace and get revenge. This combination was incredibly powerful, blending the Flash’s super speed, Etrigan’s strength and hellfire, and Ghost Rider’s devastating Penance Stare. It’s considered one of the most formidable fusions in comic book history, and raises some fascinating possibilities. Speed Demon retains Barry Allen’s (the Flash) strong moral compass, making him a compelling Ghost Rider, especially with Etrigan’s poetic flair.
2) Amazon (Wonder Woman/Storm)

This merged version of Wonder Woman and Storm is technically still called Wonder Woman, but we’ll call her Amazon for clarity, as that’s how she was named in her solo comic. In this version, Storm was shipwrecked as a child and raised as a princess on Paradise Island alongside the Amazons. Amazon combines Storm’s weather-controlling abilities with the combat skills and peaceful nature of Wonder Woman’s upbringing, making her a really compelling character. While she isn’t quite as physically strong as the original Wonder Woman, that actually works well considering Storm’s already immense power.
1) Night Lantern (Nightwing/Green Lantern)

Night Lantern, along with the Justice Titans, first appeared in issues 60 and 61 of Superman/Batman. These heroes were formed from a combination of Justice League and Titans members within a shared dream experienced by Superman and Batman, orchestrated by the villain Doctor Destiny. Known as Hal Grayson, Night Lantern led the Justice Titans and is essentially an early version of Nightwing – possessing a Power Ring but without Batman’s training. This character provides a fascinating glimpse into Dick Grayson’s potential and strongly suggests he would excel as a Green Lantern. Night Lantern embodies the leader Dick could be, equipped with an incredibly powerful weapon. It’s a compelling concept!
