5 Iconic Star Trek Ships That Were Even Better Than The Enterprise

As a huge *Star Trek* fan, the Enterprise isn’t just a ship to me – it represents everything the Federation stands for. We’ve seen so many versions over the years, from the classic NCC-1701 to even stranger ones like the Enterprise-J. The Enterprise-E was considered the most powerful ship when it was around. But honestly, I always wonder… is there *any* starship out there that can truly compare to the original Big E?

What makes a starship “better” depends on how you look at it. The ships listed below all challenged the limits of starship technology – whether in terms of weapons, durability, speed, or computer power. They were built by the Federation, created by alien races, or used technologies beyond anything we’ve seen in Star Trek, and in some way, they all managed to outperform the famous Enterprise – whether through superior firepower, faster speed, or simply being more impressive.

5) USS Excelsior: Outlasted Them All

At first, the Excelsior starship was seen as a risky project, and Captain Kirk even called it a simple testing vessel. However, it proved remarkably durable, lasting longer than any other Enterprise-class ship of its time. Introduced in *Star Trek III: The Search for Spock*, the Excelsior-class was originally built to try out a new, faster-than-warp drive. By the time Captain Hikaru Sulu commanded it in *Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country*, the Excelsior had become a powerful ship, capable of competing with the fleet’s most advanced vessels.

The Excelsior-class starship became Starfleet’s dependable mainstay, connecting the 23rd and 24th centuries and influencing the design of future ships. It appeared throughout the *Next Generation* era and beyond, including in *Deep Space Nine*, remaining a constant presence as various Enterprise ships faced crisis after crisis. While not glamorous, its lasting performance, adaptability, and overall reliability are truly remarkable.

4) USS Voyager: The Lone Survivor

While the Starship Enterprise had the support of the Federation during its galactic adventures, the USS Voyager was completely on its own. Stranded 70,000 light-years from Earth in the Delta Quadrant for seven years, Voyager had to face dangers without any chance of help arriving. Despite this, Captain Janeway led the ship and its crew to not only survive, but thrive. Voyager’s advanced technology – including bio-neural gel packs, adaptable systems, and a powerful warp drive – gave it an advantage over even more established starships, and the crew consistently overcame incredible challenges.

We often idealize the five-year mission of the Enterprise, but the journey of the Voyager was far more challenging. It faced the Borg, navigated dangerous transwarp routes, and constantly made first contact with new civilizations, all while somehow making it back to Earth in one piece. This incredible resilience and resourcefulness make Voyager arguably the toughest starship in the history of *Star Trek*. While the Enterprise represents Starfleet’s best, Voyager embodies its unwavering determination.

3) Borg Cube: Resistance is Futile

To the Borg, the starship Enterprise represents a threat. The Borg Cube first appeared in *Star Trek: The Next Generation* and has since become known as one of the most powerful ships in the series, causing trouble in *Deep Space Nine*, *Voyager*, *Picard*, and other shows. This huge, self-sufficient vessel can repair itself and absorb entire cultures. While the Enterprise relied on its crew, the Cube operated as a single collective, with millions of minds working together.

Let me tell you, the Borg Cube is a seriously intimidating ship. Forget blasting it with phasers – it’s practically indestructible, with shields that adapt to anything you throw at it and a hull that can *heal*. Even when Starfleet managed to slow it down, like in episodes featuring the Borg in *The Best of Both Worlds* and *First Contact*, it wasn’t through brute force. It was clever thinking and, honestly, a lot of luck. When you compare it to the Enterprise, the Cube just crushes it in terms of power, size, and sheer terror. Their methods are…questionable, to say the least, but you have to admit, the Cube’s engineering is incredibly impressive.

2) USS Prometheus: Tactical Superiority

Star Trek fans often describe the Enterprise as the heart of Starfleet, and the Prometheus as its powerful fist. First appearing in the Voyager episode “Message in a Bottle,” the Prometheus was a cutting-edge warship built for deep-space combat. Its most impressive feature was Multi-Vector Assault Mode, which allowed it to separate into three independent ships. Each of these smaller ships had its own warp drive, weapons, and shields, effectively tripling the Prometheus’s fighting power and making it a more formidable opponent than any single Enterprise-class starship.

The Prometheus was an incredibly advanced ship, even surprising the Doctor’s emergency medical program with its power. It surpassed the Enterprise-E in speed, strength, and adaptability, able to handle entire groups of enemy ships. Starfleet had never seen anything like it – it was quicker, more powerful, and more maneuverable than any previous vessel. It even featured sophisticated holographic technology allowing an emergency hologram to take control of the ship. While the Enterprise prioritized peaceful solutions, the Prometheus was designed for situations where diplomacy failed.

1) V’Ger: The Godship

Long before the Borg and Q, there was V’Ger. This powerful being first appeared in *Star Trek: The Motion Picture* and was originally NASA’s Voyager 6 probe. It was discovered and transformed by a race of machine lifeforms into a massive entity – 48 miles long and surrounded by an enormous energy cloud. V’Ger was incredibly powerful, nearly impossible to destroy, and could wipe out ships, cities, and even information. Driven by a search for its creator, this godlike intelligence almost ended humanity.

V’Ger possessed immense power, far exceeding that of the Enterprise. It could destroy threats, control matter and energy, and even evolve beyond a physical body by connecting with a human mind. Its alternate universe version, known as the Conqueror, was rumored to be able to alter reality. Luckily, Captain Kirk and his crew managed to establish communication instead of engaging in battle, because the Enterprise wouldn’t have stood a chance against V’Ger. As Kirk famously asked, “What does God need with a starship?”

If you could be a crew member on any starship *besides* those from the Enterprise, which one would you choose? Share your thoughts in the comments below and join the discussion on the ComicBook Forum!
