5 Iron Man Copycats Ranked by How Dangerous They Would Be to The Original

Iron Man is undeniably one of Marvel’s most recognizable heroes. Tony Stark has been a popular character in Marvel Comics for decades, and like many Avengers, he’s inspired numerous similar characters. While the concept of a hero in a powerful suit of armor isn’t new, Iron Man was among the first in comics, and many others have followed his lead over the years.

Iron Man is incredibly powerful, always improving his suit with the latest technology to keep up with superheroes and otherworldly beings. But many characters have been inspired by him. How do these copycats compare to the original? Who would Tony Stark easily defeat, and who could actually challenge him? Here’s a look at five Iron Man-inspired heroes and how they measure up against the Armored Avenger.

5. Tek Knight

Tek Knight, the superhero parody in The Boys, is difficult to take seriously. Like Tony Stark, he’s a non-powered hero in a world of super-powered individuals. Although he’s one of the more decent heroes in the comic, he’s largely presented as a joke because of his overwhelming sexual obsession, which is eventually explained as being caused by a brain tumor.

Simply put, Tek Knight wouldn’t stand a chance against Iron Man. His armor is much less advanced than Tony Stark’s, and he lacks the strategic thinking to compete. The fact that The Boys defeated him easily proves that a skilled fighter like Iron Man would have no trouble doing the same. While Tek Knight could be a threat to others, he’s no match for Iron Man.

4. Iron Lantern

Does creating a character who’s essentially half Iron Man count as cheating? This question comes up because of Amalgam Comics, a brief collaboration between Marvel and DC in the 1990s. This series featured combined characters from both universes. Iron Lantern, as the name suggests, merges Iron Man with Green Lantern (Hal Jordan). His backstory combines elements of both heroes: Hal Stark creates armor from alien technology that can create objects using light.

Combining a Stark-level intellect with an Iron Man suit and the powers of a Green Lantern is a really interesting idea – it would definitely challenge Tony Stark. However, it’s questionable whether that’s enough to make Iron Lantern truly superior to Iron Man. Iron Man constantly battles incredibly powerful extraterrestrial threats. A suit built from cosmic energy doesn’t seem to offer anything Stark hasn’t already encountered and overcome. Iron Lantern might land a few decent blows, but he’s ultimately outmatched by the original Iron Man.

3. Hardware

Curtis Metcalf, known as Hardware, is arguably Iron Man’s greatest rival and a key figure from the early days of Milestone Comics. A brilliant inventor, Curtis was exploited by a businessman who profited from his creations without giving him any credit. This betrayal motivated Curtis to build his own advanced armor and become the hero Hardware, dedicated to fighting corruption.

Hardware is one of the few heroes who could actually give Iron Man a run for his money. Like Tony Stark, he’s always upgrading his suit with new and powerful weapons to face tougher enemies. The main thing holding him back from being a truly dangerous opponent is that Curtis Metcalf is a genuinely good person – he won’t attack unless someone else is being threatened. However, if Stark were to mock his suit or technology, I think Hardware could definitely hold his own in a fight.

2. X-O Manowar

Aric of Dacia isn’t like the other heroes you’ll read about – he doesn’t have a background in technology. Living centuries ago, he existed long before modern tech was even conceived. However, after being kidnapped and merging with a sentient suit of armor called Shanhara, he became the superhero X-O Manowar and found himself thrust into the present day. Despite being a man out of time, Aric was already a skilled warrior, and bonding with Shanhara has only made him more powerful.

X-O Manowar is a hero, but he’s known for fighting other heroes in his universe. Originally from the past, Aric’s first reaction to disagreement is often combat. He’s a seasoned warrior, with experience from both ancient battles with the Visigoths and countless wars in space. Combined with his incredible Shanhara armor and its weapons, even a simple challenge from Iron Man is enough to trigger a full-scale attack.

1. Iron Patriot

Honestly, when people talk about Iron Man imitators, you absolutely have to mention Norman Osborn. He wasn’t just copying Tony Stark, he was a real threat! After taking over from S.H.I.E.L.D. with H.A.M.M.E.R., he actually seized control of Tony’s Iron Man technology. Then, to really twist the knife, he built his own Iron Man-style suit – a really patriotic one, no less – and used it to lead a team of Avengers, trying to win over the public. It was a brilliant, and infuriating, move!

When Norman Osborn was the Iron Patriot, he was an incredibly formidable and unstable threat. He had access to all of Tony Stark’s resources and relentlessly pursued Iron Man. Unlike others who merely could endanger Tony, Osborn actually did, causing significant damage and completely disrupting Iron Man’s life – more than any of his other enemies ever managed.
