The upcoming novel, Chain Reaction, will be the 31st book featuring Jack Reacher in three decades (two novels were released in 2010: 61 Hours and Worth Dying For). Even if Lee and Andrew Child stopped writing the series with this book, there’s enough material for Alan Ritchson to continue playing Reacher on screen well into his 70s. However, that might not be the best approach. It’s not just about the practicalities of Ritchson aging, but also because the quality of the Reacher novels varies; while they’re generally enjoyable as light reading for vacations, not all of them are equally strong.
The Prime Video series has already covered several of Lee Child’s Jack Reacher novels – Killing Floor, Bad Luck and Trouble, Persuader, and the upcoming Gone Tomorrow. The two earlier Reacher movies adapted One Shot and Never Go Back. But with so many books in the series, which ones are essential reading for fans of the show? We recommend five titles. You might even hope to see them adapted for television someday!
5) Tripwire

Tripwire, the third book written but the seventh in the overall series, offers the most insight into Jack Reacher’s character. If you’re looking to understand him as a person, this novel is just as important as Killing Floor.
Okay, so in this one, I’m pulled into a case through Jodie Garber, the daughter of a man who was like a father figure to me. She needs my help finding him, and let’s just say we have a bit of history – a definite spark there, but right now, it’s all business. Turns out, her father was working on something big before he disappeared, and that’s landed both of us squarely in the crosshairs of a seriously dangerous guy – Hook Hobie, and believe me, this villain is the most terrifying I’ve ever faced. It’s a gripping story, and Hobie really raises the stakes!
4) The Midnight Line

Usually, the first Jack Reacher novels are considered stronger than the more recent ones. However, The Midnight Line, the 22nd book in the series (and 23rd in terms of the story’s timeline), is an exception to that rule.
This installment is arguably the most compelling in the series. It tackles important issues like the challenges veterans face and the serious opioid epidemic. The story also starts differently than most others – instead of someone harming Reacher, he discovers a West Point ring and makes it his mission to return it, understanding that the owner likely pawned it only due to extreme financial hardship.
3) The Hard Way

“The Hard Way” is the tenth book in the Jack Reacher series and the thirteenth story overall, and it really shines thanks to a fantastic final section. The story begins with Reacher at a diner – one of his go-to spots. He notices a Mercedes and soon learns that Edward Lane, the head of a security firm, is dealing with a crisis: his wife and child have been kidnapped, and he suspects the driver of that Mercedes is involved.
It wasn’t a kidnapping, but a desperate escape. The person who hired Reacher has been lying about their identity, and a confrontation at a remote farm will be necessary to uncover the truth.
2) Running Blind

“Running Blind” is considered one of the best Jack Reacher novels focused on mystery. It’s so effective because the story deeply connects to Reacher’s past in the Army – something he values above all else.
A killer is targeting women, all of whom served in the Army and had previously reported problems with their commanding officers. Because this killer’s victims also knew Reacher, he becomes a person of interest. However, when another woman is murdered while the FBI is watching him, they clear him as a suspect. Instead, they reluctantly enlist his help in the investigation, using unconventional and frustrating tactics.
1) Die Trying

Now that they’ve successfully adapted the first Jack Reacher novel, Killing Floor, it makes sense to move on to Die Trying, which many fans consider the best in the series. This story, the sixth in the book order, features Reacher helping a woman with a disability. However, a simple act of kindness quickly turns dangerous when they’re threatened with a gun, thrusting Reacher into a conflict with a dangerous militia group.
This Reacher book is a real standout. The connection between Reacher and FBI agent Holly Johnson is one of the strongest partnerships in the series, the danger feels intense, and the story’s focus on a threatening, cult-like group is particularly memorable.
