The animated series *Justice League* and *Justice League Unlimited* brought DC’s iconic superhero team to a new generation of fans and further developed many of its members. *Justice League* premiered on November 17, 2001, as a continuation of the beloved *Batman: The Animated Series* and *Superman: The Animated Series*, creating a shared universe for DC’s animated stories. *Justice League Unlimited* followed on July 31, 2004, significantly increasing the number of heroes in the League and delivering more exciting adventures until its conclusion on May 13, 2006.
The animated series *Justice League* and *Justice League Unlimited* together feature five seasons and 91 episodes. These shows brought together classic heroes like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and The Flash to form the iconic Justice League. Across these two connected series, both well-known and newer heroes had their stories expanded and their popularity boosted. Here are five heroes who especially benefited from their portrayal in *Justice League* and *Justice League Unlimited*.
5) Green Arrow
Green Arrow, the Emerald Archer from DC Comics, has always been loosely connected to the Justice League, mostly through friendships with heroes like Batman and Green Lantern. The *Justice League Unlimited* animated series significantly boosted his popularity beyond the comics by making him a regular member of the team. The show also let his personality shine with witty remarks and his signature trick arrows, like the boxing glove arrow. This increased exposure helped Green Arrow gain a wider audience, which ultimately paved the way for his appearances in live-action shows like *Smallville* and *Arrow*, where he’s consistently portrayed as a team player.
4) Zatanna
Zatanna Zatara, DC’s powerful sorceress, first appeared in the DC Animated Universe as a childhood friend of Bruce Wayne’s on *Batman: The Animated Series*. It was a nice nod to the show’s history when she later joined the Justice League on *Justice League Unlimited* (voiced by Jennifer Hale in “This Little Piggy” and Juliet Landau in “The Balance”). Though not as central a figure as Hawkgirl (voiced by Maria Canals-Barrera), Zatanna’s presence in the League’s larger team gave her more visibility and introduced many viewers to the magical side of the DC Universe. Even as a supporting member of the League on *Justice League Unlimited*, Zatanna’s magic consistently delivered impressive results.
3) Aquaman
Aquaman wasn’t always seen as a powerful hero. He was often the subject of jokes, especially after his portrayal in the classic Super Friends cartoon. However, a comic book series in the 1990s, written by Peter David, completely changed his image, giving him a tougher, more serious personality. This new version of Aquaman carried over into Justice League and Justice League Unlimited, where he was voiced by Scott Rummell as a strong, somewhat rough leader of the seas, even sporting a harpoon hand. Though a planned live-action Aquaman TV series with Justin Hartley stalled production, limiting his role on Justice League Unlimited after its first season, this portrayal of Aquaman as a no-nonsense warrior helped redefine the character long before Jason Momoa brought him to life on the big screen.
2) Green Lantern
Over the years, many characters have become Green Lanterns in DC Comics, but Hal Jordan was the most famous for a long time. Later, the animated series *Justice League* and *Justice League Unlimited* introduced John Stewart (voiced by Phil LaMarr) as the main Green Lantern, making him a key member of the Justice League. John Stewart’s portrayal in these shows was incredibly impactful, and he quickly became just as popular – or even more so – than Hal Jordan, becoming the Green Lantern for a new generation of fans. While John Stewart was already a known character in the comics, his appearances on *Justice League* and *Justice League Unlimited* made him a beloved hero for millions of young DC fans.
1) Martian Manhunter
Martian Manhunter, or J’onn J’onzz, is a remarkably powerful DC hero who often plays a supporting role despite abilities like invisibility, telepathy, shapeshifting, flight, and strength on par with Superman. It’s surprising he hasn’t been a more central figure, which is why his key role in *Justice League* and *Justice League Unlimited* feels so satisfying. Beautifully voiced by Carl Lumbly, Martian Manhunter is the heart of those animated series – a powerful being defined by his empathy and kindness. He truly captures the essence of J’onn J’onzz, a hero with a huge heart and a well-known fondness for chocolate. Martian Manhunter is a standout character and essential to the success of both *Justice League* and *Justice League Unlimited*.
