The Justice League is DC Comics’ most iconic superhero team. For many years, they’ve been the first line of defense against huge crises and threats to the entire universe. It makes sense that they’re filled with DC’s strongest heroes, as they often fight villains capable of destroying worlds – Superman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, and Green Lantern are just a few examples, each powerful enough to face a planetary threat alone. However, while the League is known for its most powerful members, many other capable heroes often go unnoticed.
Superheroes have become increasingly powerful over time, and a compelling story often comes from a character exceeding expectations. While fewer limitations can create exciting challenges, many heroes with unbelievably strong abilities are surprisingly underestimated. This article highlights five Justice League members who appear unassuming but possess truly frightening powers. Let’s take a closer look at these overlooked heroes.
5) Ragman

Ragman’s unassuming appearance hides a truly terrifying power. His unique suit isn’t just clothing – it absorbs the souls of evil people he touches, weaving them into the fabric itself. This makes him stronger and grants him the memories and abilities of everyone he’s absorbed, even magical skills. Once someone is trapped within the Suit of Souls, there’s no escape, making Ragman the perfect, inescapable prison. If he catches you, there’s no hope.
4) Hawkman

Hawkman often gets made fun of – his big wings, helmet, and old-fashioned weapons make him an easy target for jokes about being a ‘chicken wing.’ But he’s actually much more powerful than people think. His strength comes from the special Nth metal that makes up his wings and weapons, which can bend the rules of gravity and physics. This gives him incredible speed, strength, and toughness, allowing him to fight even someone as powerful as Superman. While he’s not on Superman’s level, he can actually harm the Man of Steel, which is saying something. And that’s not even considering his countless past lives – in one of them, he was the most fearsome warrior and killer in the entire universe. You definitely don’t want to cross Hawkman.
3) Animal Man

People often think Animal Man can fully transform into animals, like Beast Boy. However, his powers are more like Vixen’s – he gains the abilities of animals, but doesn’t drastically change his form. Even this ability is incredibly powerful, but what truly sets him apart is his connection to the Red. Similar to how the Green represents all plant life, the Red is an energy field linking all animal life, including humans. This allows Animal Man to connect with every living creature in the universe and access their powers, making him exceptionally versatile and powerful.
2) Doctor Light

The original Doctor Light could only manipulate light nearby, but the second Doctor Light is far more powerful. Like her predecessor, she can create energy beams and absorb light. However, her connection to the Light of Creation – also known as the Source – is what truly sets her apart. This connection allows her to overcome even the darkest shadows, control all forms of light, and even transform into pure light, bypassing any defenses. Because of this link, Doctor Light’s power is essentially unlimited, making her one of the most powerful heroes out there.
1) Aquaman

Aquaman is often the target of jokes about being a weak superhero, but he’s actually incredibly powerful. He’s not just able to communicate with marine life – he possesses immense physical strength, capable of going toe-to-toe with Superman. He’s demonstrated this power by single-handedly lifting a 160,000-ton ocean liner, as shown in Justice League #10 (2011), and even moving an entire tectonic plate in Aquaman #4 (2011). Beyond strength, Aquaman is incredibly durable, easily surviving the extreme pressures of the deep ocean and withstanding powerful attacks like RPG rockets.
Lately, Aquaman gained the power to control water, just like his wife, allowing him to manipulate it in any form. On top of that, he became the avatar of the Blue, giving him a connection to all the water in the universe. At full power, he can essentially become all water, which is vital for all life. He also commands sea creatures, wields magic, and possesses powerful artifacts. People underestimate Aquaman, but he’s a far greater threat than they realize. He truly deserves the respect that comes with being the King of the Seas.
