5 Long Forgotten PlayStation Games That Deserve a Modern Remake

When Sony launched the PlayStation in 1994, it quickly became a major force in the video game industry. The system revolutionized gaming, introducing many popular franchises that are still enjoyed today. While some classics, like Final Fantasy VII, have been updated for new audiences, many other great PS1 games haven’t been touched in years. Here are five of the best games from the PlayStation’s early years that deserve a modern remake.

1) Future Cop: LAPD

Released in 1998 by Electronic Arts, Future Cop: LAPD is a highly enjoyable third-person shooter. Players control the pilot of the X1-Alpha robot, fighting crime in Los Angeles in the year 2098. This impressive robot can also transform into a speedy hover car, making chases and navigating the city a breeze – though piloting the massive mecha is the real draw! The game was a hit with players, but never received a sequel. However, Aperirogon Games is currently working on a modern remake, though it’s a separate project and not officially connected to the original EA game.

2) Vagrant Story

Released for the PlayStation in 2000, Vagrant Story was created by Square and shares similarities with Final Fantasy Tactics due to overlapping development teams. The game takes place in the world of Ivalice, following a Riskbreaker investigating a connection between a dangerous cult and a powerful politician. What sets Vagrant Story apart from typical RPGs is its lack of traditional features like shops and townspeople. Instead, the focus is on crafting and upgrading weapons, solving puzzles, and employing strategic gameplay. Despite being highly praised as a standout title in the genre, and appearing in Final Fantasy XII, Vagrant Story has never received a sequel or remake.

3) Syphon Filter

I remember being totally hooked on Syphon Filter when it came out on the PS1 in 1999! It was a really cool third-person shooter where you played as Gabe Logan and Lian Xing, these agents chasing down a big international terrorist. What I loved was how it mixed stealth, action, and even puzzle-solving. It was a huge success and led to five sequels, the last one, Syphon Filter: Logan’s Shadow, appearing on the PSP in 2007. It’s been quiet ever since, which is a shame, because a lot of us fans are still hoping for a new game! Fingers crossed we’ll get one eventually.

4) Dino Crisis

Capcom released Dino Crisis for the PlayStation in 1999, and it quickly became popular. The game puts you in the role of Regina, an agent sent to a remote island research facility with a special ops team to investigate strange events. They discover the island has been taken over by dinosaurs, and Regina must battle these creatures to uncover the island’s mysteries and ensure her team’s survival. While Dino Crisis led to two sequels and a spin-off game, the series hasn’t had a new installment in over two decades. Many fans are eager for a return to the franchise, but so far, only re-releases have been made – there haven’t been any remakes or new sequels.

5) Parasite Eve

Released in 1998, Parasite Eve was Square’s first game to receive a mature rating. The story follows Aya Brea, a New York City police officer, as she races to stop a woman known as Eve from causing mass destruction through spontaneous human combustion. Set over six days in 1997, the game combines action-packed gameplay with a compelling narrative. Parasite Eve contributed to the surge in popularity of Japanese horror and led to two sequels, the most recent being The 3rd Birthday in 2011. While the series hasn’t seen a new installment since then, its unique premise and strong story would make it a great candidate for a modern remake.
