Many big-budget sci-fi films have pushed the genre forward—think of classics like Metropolis, The Matrix, 2001: A Space Odyssey (which was expensive for its time in 1968), Blade Runner, Avatar (especially for its special effects), and Inception. However, lower-budget sci-fi movies can be just as influential. Often, a clever idea and resulting success—even if it takes a while to happen—can inspire others to create similar films. At the very least, successful low-budget films highlight what works well, and filmmakers build new stories around those effective elements.
Here are some sci-fi movies made with very little money that still managed to innovate and influence the genre. Let’s take a look at how they achieved that.
The Terminator ($6.4 Million)

We’ll briefly cover the plots of these films, but most are fairly obscure. However, James Cameron’s The Terminator is well-known, so we won’t go into detail. It’s remarkable how much like a big-budget film it feels, especially considering its small $6.4 million budget (equivalent to about $20 million today) – scenes like those after Judgement Day and the final showdown with the T-800’s skeletal form are particularly impressive.
Similar to Alien, The Terminator successfully blended science fiction and horror. More significantly, the film tapped into growing public anxieties about artificial intelligence – concerns that, as it turns out, were well-founded. Beyond its impact on the genre, The Terminator launched the careers of its stars, making Arnold Schwarzenegger, James Cameron, Michael Biehn, and Linda Hamilton household names.

Moon ($5 Million)

Duncan Jones’ film, Moon, focuses almost entirely on Sam Bell, played by Sam Rockwell. Bell is nearing the end of a three-year contract mining helium-3 on the Moon when he makes a startling discovery: he’s simply a clone created to reduce company expenses. This revelation completely changes how he understands his life.
As we noted with Alien when discussing The Terminator, Moon was a significant film. It proved that tense, contained stories set in space could still be powerful. It also showed that compelling, realistic science fiction didn’t need a huge budget to be well-made, and it helped launch Sam Rockwell’s career as a leading actor.
Monsters ($500,000)

In the movie Monsters, a photographer embarks on a dangerous mission to rescue his boss’s daughter from a part of Mexico infested with tentacled creatures. To escape the dangerous area, they’ll need to be clever and avoid detection. As they face these challenges, they may also find themselves falling in love.
The film Monsters proved that a convincing, detailed post-apocalyptic world could be created even with limited funds. It also demonstrated that a monster movie doesn’t need to focus heavily on the creatures themselves to be effective. Most notably, though, Monsters launched the career of Gareth Edwards, whose later films Godzilla and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story also emphasized a realistic, grounded style.

Cube ($278,000)

The movie Cube begins with five strangers waking up inside a bizarre, cube-shaped structure. The only things in each room are doors leading to other similar rooms, and most of these rooms contain deadly traps. As the story unfolds, they discover one of them built this complex maze, while others possess skills that could help them escape. However, hidden among them is a killer who doesn’t care if the others survive.
The movie Cube was incredibly important in popularizing the escape room style of storytelling. Many believe that Saw wouldn’t exist without it. Cube demonstrated that trapping characters in a simple, isolated setting could be a cost-effective way to create intense suspense.

Primer ($7,000)

Shane Carruth wrote, directed, produced, edited, and stars in Primer, a film about two engineer friends who stumble upon time travel while trying to reduce the weight of objects. They build a time machine, but using it creates longer days and unexpected, problematic consequences.
The film Primer definitively showed two important things. First, you don’t need a huge budget to tell a captivating story. Second, using realistic, scientifically accurate conversations won’t turn viewers away, as long as the plot remains engaging.
