If you missed this week’s MAD About DC special, you really missed out – it had some of the funniest Batman jokes in a long time! DC Comics has made it a tradition to release a special comic for April Fool’s Day, and this year, instead of a silly theme like last year’s Harley Quinn comic or 2024’s Ape-Ril Special, they created a one-off issue similar to MAD Magazine. Led by comedian Chip Zdarsky, many famous comic book creators joined forces to playfully poke fun at the DC Universe – both the things they love and the things they don’t!
I just finished watching this amazing special, and it didn’t hold back! Seriously, everything at DC got a good-natured ribbing, from how they publish comics to some of their most memorable (and sometimes embarrassing!) moments. Of course, Batman, being the biggest star, took the brunt of the jokes – and it was hilarious! They poked fun at his relationships with the whole Bat-Family, even brought up the whole Jason Todd situation, and made fun of how wacky some of his villains’ names are. If you haven’t seen MAD About DC #1 yet, you’re missing out – here are 5 of the funniest Batman moments!
5. “Happy Birthday, Mr. Wayne”

Looking for a unique gift for the Batman fan who has everything? Mariko Tamaki and Riley Rossmo created a hilarious one-page comic, “Happy Birthday, Mr Wayne,” that playfully shows Batman receiving gifts from the Bat-Family. The comic features sweet notes from each family member and Batman’s amusing reactions to their presents. It’s a quick, delightful read packed with fun details—even bats in party hats! If you enjoy lighthearted stories about Batman and his family, like Wayne Family Adventures, you’ll love this funny spoof.
4. “Jason Todd – Vote Killer”

Andrew Wheeler and Stephen Byrne deliver a darkly humorous take with “Jason Todd – Vote Killer.” Inspired by the famous fan vote that determined Jason Todd’s fate in “Death in the Family,” this parody features Red Hood demanding an apology from those who voted for his demise. The ‘advertisement’ provides two phone numbers, but only to allow readers to personally apologize to Jason for their vote. It’s a joke rooted in Red Hood’s anger, and the image of Jason demanding apologies from over 5,000 people is surprisingly funny.
3. “Batman Bored Game”

I’m a big fan of jokes that are self-aware and play with the idea of humor itself, and Shannon Wheeler’s “Batman Bored Game” does that brilliantly. It presents a Batman-themed game, complete with rules (though they’re more for show). The game board is packed with jokes about Batman’s history and gently pokes fun at overly enthusiastic fans. I especially enjoyed the humor about DC’s tendency to create endless Batman spin-offs. It’s too bad you can’t actually play the game without damaging the comic itself.
2. “The MAD Guide to Batman’s Villain’s Secret Identities!”

The creative team behind The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, Ryan North and Erica Henderson, are back with a hilarious parody: The MAD Guide to Batman’s Villain’s Secret Identities. The story centers around Batman finally realizing that his enemies’ names are cleverly connected to their villainous personas (like E. Nygma for the Riddler, or Harleen Quinzel for Harley Quinn). This leads Batman on a city-wide search for anyone else with a suspiciously fitting name – think Clay F. Ace or Cal Enderman. The comic also includes a fun joke about current Batman writer Matt Fraction. It’s a simple bit, but it really lands.
1. The MAD Fold-In

No MAD Magazine special is complete without a fold-in, and MAD About DC #1 delivers one created by Charles Soule and Ryan Browne. It features Batman in the Batcave, trying to solve a tech problem that threatens all creators. The fold-in poses the question: “What terrifying evil could finally defeat Batman once and for all?” I won’t spoil it, but the answer is both a funny joke and a worrying prediction about the future of comics.
