For quite some time, Mario has reaped the benefits of Nintendo’s outstanding work in creating exceptional 3D platform games. Titles such as Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Galaxy 2, and Super Mario Odyssey constitute the majority of their offerings, although there are a few for characters like Kirby or Toad. However, the success of Donkey Kong Bananza suggests that Nintendo’s best platform games don’t necessarily need Mario as the protagonist. They have the capability to create fantastic games starring any character from their roster, and there are several other options yet to receive a major 3D platform game. Here are some characters Nintendo might want to shine the spotlight on in their next platformer.
5. Bowser
Playing a 3D platformer starring Bowser would be an exciting experience! It’s refreshing to have a chance to control the antagonist, which isn’t often offered in Nintendo’s games. Bowser, their most recognized villain, debuted in the very first Super Mario Bros., but hasn’t had many opportunities to take center stage in a significant platformer series.
As a die-hard fan, I’ve always wondered if Nintendo might explore the potential of featuring Bowser as a protagonist instead of the usual antagonist. Instead of our beloved Mario racing to save Princess Peach, perhaps this time around, it could be Bowser himself, gallivanting across galaxies or continents with an ulterior motive – kidnapping Peach! The storyline could delve into Bowser’s backstory, revealing him as either a misunderstood villain with a connection to Peach or a truly evil character who simply desires her for his own reasons. It’s an intriguing concept that has the potential to shake up the classic Super Mario Bros. series!
4. Pauline
Everyone adored Pauline in the game Super Mario Odyssey. She was also popular in Mario Kart Tour. In Donkey Kong Bananza, Pauline stood out, even though she was just a secondary character. With her recent introduction to the series, she already has many supporters. It seems that she would excel in her own game, as she can undoubtedly make an impression in others as a supporting character.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but imagine an intriguing spin-off from the epic tale of Odyssey. Picture this: there’s a captivating interim between Bananza and Odyssey where she ascends to the role of mayor in New Donk City. After the thrilling events of Bananza, I can’t help but wonder about her journey and how the city transforms over time. It would be nothing short of amazing if Nintendo decided to create an exceptional 3D platformer centered primarily around this remarkable locale!
3. Peach
In this particular scenario, the Mario video game series could learn from the success of the Zelda series by introducing a similar concept. Recently, they created an engaging and popular Zelda game where Princess Zelda is the main character, on a mission to rescue Link. This structure could be adapted for Mario as well. Perhaps this time around, Mario finds himself kidnapped and it’s up to Princess Peach to mount a rescue mission.
In line with Nintendo’s current direction, as evidenced by the blockbuster success of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” it appears that video games are gradually adopting similar aesthetics. For instance, certain character designs in “Mario Kart World” echo those from the movie. Similarly, Donkey Kong’s appearance remains consistent between “Bananza” and the film. Moreover, Princess Peach, who was depicted as more than just a damsel in distress in the movie, could make for an exceptional game character.
2. Waluigi
Waluigi is certainly due for his own game. While he may not be the most popular character among fans, this is mainly because he’s typically just a substitute in games with a vast roster of characters. He hasn’t had the opportunity to truly showcase his potential yet, and it’s high time he got that chance.
In a practical sense, a game featuring Waluigi could take various forms, but considering Nintendo’s success in 3D platforming, it seems logical for them to focus on this genre, as it is their strongest suit. This approach could help propel Waluigi into broader recognition since these types of games tend to be well-received and often outperform others.
1. Yoshi
As a dedicated fan, I firmly believe that Yoshi is truly deserving of more spotlight. For years, he’s stood faithfully by Mario’s side, acting as both companion and helpful ally. While he has had the opportunity to star in his own games, it’s been quite some time, and he hasn’t yet received the level of attention that Mario or Donkey Kong have enjoyed. It’s high time Yoshi shone even brighter!
It’s unfortunate that he wasn’t included in a 3D platformer, as Yoshi’s exploration into the world of 2D platforming with “Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island” was quite successful. This game is still considered one of the best 2D platformers ever made and it’s now 30 years old. He could have really shone in a 3D platformer (Yoshi’s Crafted World isn’t fully 3D), perhaps venturing into the skies (since Donkey Kong Bananza went underground) and using his flutter jump abilities.
