Marvel Comics has a long history of working with incredibly talented creators – writers, artists, and everyone involved in making the comics. These professionals have crafted some of the most iconic and influential superhero stories of all time, shaping the comic book landscape for decades. A major contributor to Marvel’s success over the last twenty years was writer Brian Michael Bendis. He began working for Marvel in 2000 and quickly became one of the industry’s most popular writers, known for his work on titles like Spider-Man, the Avengers, and Daredevil. After 18 years with Marvel, Bendis moved on to work for DC Comics and independent publishers.
Marvel is facing some challenges lately, and there’s talk about Brian Michael Bendis possibly returning to write for them. Whether that happens is a complicated issue, but many fans agree there are certain characters who would really benefit from his writing. Here are five Marvel characters who could thrive with Bendis back on board.
5) Jessica Jones

Brian Michael Bendis first introduced Jessica Jones in his 2001 series, Alias, a popular Marvel MAX title. The story followed Jones, formerly the superhero Jewel, as she became a private investigator after being traumatized by the villain Purple Man. Over the course of the series, she rebuilt her confidence, found love with Luke Cage, and even teamed up with the Avengers. Despite being a fan-favorite, Jessica Jones hasn’t been featured prominently in recent years. Many fans would love to see Bendis, a skilled crime writer, return to the character he created and explore her more mature themes again.
4) Miles Morales

Miles Morales offered a fresh perspective on Spider-Man, and it all began with writer Brian Bendis. He not only created the character for Marvel’s Ultimate Universe but also wrote the most memorable stories about him. Since Bendis left Marvel, Miles hasn’t been as strong in the comics. He’s fallen from being a top-tier hero, and his recent series has focused more on increasing his power level than on compelling storytelling. Despite Miles’ growing popularity in movies and other media, his comics need a boost, and a return to the vision of his original creator could provide just that.
3) Wolverine

The Ultimate Wolverine comic is doing well, but the main Wolverine title is struggling. Sales are down, and many fans are unhappy with the current writer, Saladin Ahmed, and his portrayal of the character. Some believe Brian Michael Bendis could revitalize the series. While he’s never written a solo Wolverine comic, Bendis has a strong history with the character, having featured him prominently in New Avengers, All-New X-Men, and major events like House of M, Secret Invasion, and Age of Ultron. He understands Logan’s voice and has always shown respect for the character. Bendis could deliver a compelling, gritty crime story, reminiscent of the highly-regarded run by Greg Rucka in the early 2000s.
2) Luke Cage

Brian Michael Bendis was a big fan of Luke Cage, consistently including him in his comics like Alias, Secret War, New Avengers, and Defenders, as well as numerous other storylines. Under Bendis’s writing, Cage rose to prominence, becoming the leader of the New Avengers after Civil War and guiding them through major events of the 2000s. This transformed Cage from a simple mercenary hero into a true A-list superhero. While he’s currently the mayor of New York City, the position feels like a symbolic role and he isn’t actively involved in significant heroics. Bendis truly elevated Luke Cage, and it’s time for the character to return to the impactful, heroic status he once enjoyed as Harlem’s greatest hero.
1) Daredevil

Daredevil has consistently had exceptional comic book runs over the past 45 years, arguably more than any other Marvel or DC character. However, the most recent series was poorly received by both readers and critics, leading to its cancellation. This was a rare misstep for the character – the last time a Daredevil run was so heavily criticized was in the late 2000s, though that series wasn’t cancelled. Both Matt Murdock and his fans deserve a return to quality storytelling, and bringing back Brian Michael Bendis, whose run on the character was outstanding, would be a great way to achieve that. Pairing him with frequent collaborator and former Daredevil artist Alex Maleev could really excite fans.
