5 Marvel Stories That Defined Mister Sinister

Before Disney acquired Fox, Mister Sinister was planned to be a major villain in the X-Men films. Now, there’s still potential for him to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as he hasn’t been featured in any movies yet. He could be a great villain to introduce to audiences unfamiliar with the comics. Luckily, there’s plenty of source material – both classic and recent – from the Marvel comics that the MCU could use to build compelling stories around the character.

Whether it’s relentlessly tormenting Scott Summers or playing a key role in the fall of Krakoa, Mister Sinister has been central to some of Marvel’s most compelling storylines. Here are five of the best.

5) Sinister’s Six

The latest Mister Sinister story arc is called ‘Sinister’s Six,’ scheduled for release in 2025. It’s part of the larger ‘Age of Revelation’ event, and centers on Sinister’s plan to build a team to seize power within Revelation. He assembles Havok, Black Cat, Domino, Omega Red, Fantomex, and Venom to help him accomplish this.

This side series is a standout from the Age of Revelation, offering some of the most surprising plot twists of the entire event. It’s a really compelling story where Sinister is at his most cunning, only to be outsmarted by an unlikely opponent.

4) The Further Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix

Published in 1994, The Further Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix is a four-issue X-Men story arc centered around the villain Mister Sinister. Sinister aims to exploit Cyclops and Phoenix (Jean Grey) to expand his power. He has a history with the couple, previously creating and then kidnapping Scott Summers’ wife, Madelyne Pryor, and their son, Nathan. To save Nathan from a life-threatening Techno-Organic Virus engineered by Sinister, Scott sent him to the future, where he grew into the time-traveling hero known as Cable and eventually returned to the present.

This four-part story follows Jean Grey and Scott Summers as their minds are sent far into the future. Their mission? To raise their son, Nathan, and prepare him to become the hero known as Cable. They spend years in this future, secretly guiding Nathan’s development so he can eventually fulfill his destiny. While the story centers on Scott and Jean’s journey as parents, the events are ultimately set in motion by the machinations of Mister Sinister, who operates behind the scenes in this deeply emotional tale.

3) Hellions

The Krakoa Era saw many excellent X-Men comics, and one standout was Hellions. This team was controlled by the villainous Mister Sinister and comprised mutants the Quiet Council deemed unstable or dangerous – including Empath, Orphan-Maker, Nanny, Wild Child, Greycow, and Havok. Cyclops secretly added Psylocke to the team to monitor Sinister’s activities.

The storyline spanned 16 issues and followed a typical Mister Sinister plot: he thought he was in control, but ultimately failed. It concluded with a devastating betrayal by the Quiet Council, resulting in the loss of Psylocke’s child and the near-destruction of the team. The story also exposed Sinister’s deceit towards the Quiet Council, setting the stage for future consequences.

2) Inferno

The ‘Inferno’ storyline is considered one of the most intense and dramatic in X-Men comics. It began when Mister Sinister secretly created Madelyne Pryor as an exact copy of Jean Grey. After Scott Summers returned to Jean, Sinister had his followers attack Madelyne and steal their son, Nathan. Though Madelyne survived the attack, the trauma led her to transform into the villainous Goblin Queen.

Mister Sinister manipulated Madelyne into a desperate situation, leading her to believe she had to sacrifice her baby, Nathan, to unleash hell on Earth. Stopping her required the combined efforts of all the X-Men teams. This storyline was incredibly disturbing and nearly destroyed the mutant community, with Mister Sinister threatening worldwide devastation.

1) Sins of Sinister

The most dangerous and unsettling story arc featuring Mister Sinister is Sins of Sinister, which played a key role in the downfall of the X-Men’s nation of Krakoa. What’s unique about this story is that it jumps to different points in the future—10, 100, and 1,000 years ahead—to show the consequences if Sinister’s plans succeeded.

The Krakoa era started because Moira MacTaggert could reset the timeline by dying and being reborn, though she could only do this a limited number of times. Mister Sinister discovered a way to bypass this limit by creating clones of Moira, allowing him to repeatedly reset the timeline until he achieved his desired outcomes. This manipulation eventually alerted the original Moira to what was happening, and her attempt to stop him in the future ultimately signaled the downfall of Krakoa and the end of mutant peace.
