In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there have been instances where villains transformed into heroes, creating some of the most intriguing character journeys. Characters such as Steve Rogers/Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), and Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) are initially portrayed as heroes, whereas characters like Thanos (Josh Brolin), Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan), and Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe) are typically depicted as the “bad guys.” However, these villains often have complex backstories that make them intriguing. The transformation of villains into heroes in the MCU offers a unique and captivating perspective within the larger narrative of the franchise.
Ranked from worst to best, these MCU characters have amazing villain-to-hero arcs.
5) Ghost

The heartrending narrative surrounding Ava Starr/Ghost in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has taken a turn towards optimism. Previously portrayed as an adversary in Ant-Man and the Wasp, she partnered with Bill Foster (Laurence Fishburne) to seize Hank Pym’s (Michael Douglas) Quantum Tunnel for therapeutic purposes due to her molecular imbalance. In a future storyline like Thunderbolts*, her condition is managed, and Ghost transforms into an assassin for Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), eventually joining the Thunderbolts or New Avengers.
As I watched Ghost’s transformation unfold on screen, it was clear that her initial foray into villainy set the stage perfectly for her eventual heroic journey. Born from a tumultuous past and driven by circumstances beyond her control, Ghost’s descent into crime felt all too human and heartbreaking. Her alliance with the New Avengers marks a new beginning for this character who, in truth, just yearned for the love and understanding that she never received.
With the upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday, Ghost stands poised to elevate her standing as an MCU heroine. Having now joined forces with the forces of good, I can’t wait to see how this complex character navigates the challenges ahead and cements her place among Marvel’s most formidable heroes.
4) Bucky Barnes

In the narrative, Sebastian Stan’s character, Bucky Barnes, also known as the Winter Soldier, undergoes a transformation at the hands of HYDRA. He is subjected to brainwashing and becomes a relentless killer, targeting Steve Rogers (Captain America) and his associates. However, the tragic tale of Captain America’s confidant takes a turn for the better as Bucky sets off on a lengthy quest for redemption. With Steve Rogers, Sam Wilson/Captain America (Anthony Mackie), and other allies by his side, Bucky manages to regain control over his own actions and eventually becomes an Avenger. Unexpectedly, in the Thunderbolts, he finds himself among the New Avengers.
Throughout my time as a supporter, I’ve witnessed Bucky’s extraordinary journey in the MCU spanning over a decade. Despite his turbulent past as a mind-controlled Super Soldier, Bucky has consistently demonstrated that one’s history does not define them entirely. His unwavering dedication to assisting people, whether as an Avenger or a congressman, underscores his heroic nature.
Even when he’s been underutilized in certain roles, many fans, including myself, appreciate the captivating transformation of Bucky from villain to hero. A beacon of resilience, empathy, and leadership, Bucky’s current standing in the MCU reflects his significant progress since his Winter Soldier days. I eagerly await to see where his story goes next within the franchise.
3) Wanda Maximoff

Wanda Maximoff, portrayed by Elizabeth Olsen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has taken a distinctive and captivating journey. Originally appearing as an adversary alongside her brother Pietro (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), Wanda transformed into an ally of the Avengers, fighting alongside them in Sokovia and against Thanos. However, she later confined the residents of Westview within a fake reality, which was followed by a period of redemption. Yet, under the control of the Darkhold, she became a destructive force, causing havoc across the multiverse. Wanda’s complex character development adds an exceptional level of intrigue to her storyline in the MCU.
Wanda is complex and easily misled, yet incredibly strong-willed. Her personal losses have greatly affected her, but throughout various Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films such as Avengers: Age of Ultron, WandaVision, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, she consistently strives to correct her mistakes. Often unfairly portrayed as a villain by others, even when not intentionally causing harm, Wanda’s character in the MCU is richly layered.
Regrettably, the stark tonal differences between WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness slightly diminish her character arc’s impact, but she remains a highly compelling antihero within the MCU. With a captivating transformation from villain to hero, Wanda is both relatable and deserving of support, despite her flaws. Her story offers an engaging depiction of redemption and growth.
2) Loki

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Loki, portrayed by Tom Hiddleston, has shown a unique blend of being both heroic and villainous, and this transformation has been masterfully crafted by the MCU. Originally a foe, appearing in Thor and The Avengers where he plots to invade Asgard and Earth, Loki’s character arc is almost flawless. After his defeat, Loki undergoes significant personal change, teaming up with his brother Thor in Thor: Ragnarok, yet tragically meeting his end at the hands of Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. Despite retaining his knack for mischief and trickery, Loki’s character development reveals a genuine compassion within him. His alternate self takes center stage as the protagonist in the TV series Loki, where he navigates through dimensions to safeguard the Sacred Timeline and ascend to the title of God of Stories.
One of the most captivating characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Loki, initially portrayed as an elegant villain, displays a surprising heroic transformation. Originally introduced as a disregarded Asgardian prince grappling with feelings of inadequacy, his journey becomes a more intricate tale revolving around family and self-sacrifice. It’s difficult to guess whether Loki will exhibit his wicked or benevolent persona, but this uncertainty keeps viewers captivated by his compelling storyline. Fortunately, Loki’s MCU adventure continues, with the newly appointed ruler of timelines set to make a triumphant comeback in Avengers: Doomsday.
1) Nebula

In a somewhat overlooked portrayal in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the character Nebula, played by Karen Gillan, stands out as one who undergoes an exceptional transformation from a villain to a hero. Initially presented as the antagonistic adopted daughter of Thanos and sister to Gamora (Zoe Saldaña), Nebula works alongside the warlord Ronan (Lee Pace) in the movie “Guardians of the Galaxy.” Later, she joins forces with the Guardians on her path to redemption. In “Avengers: Endgame,” a crucial role is played by Nebula as she aids Earth’s strongest heroes in their mission to vanquish Thanos and restore those lost due to the Snap. During the Avengers’ time-traveling adventure, Nebula encounters her past self and confronts the abuse she endured at the hands of Thanos.
This significant part of Nebula’s storyline within the Nebula’s arc, as shown in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, showcases Marvel Cinematic Universe’s exceptional character development. By triumphing over her harrowing past to establish a hard-earned life on Knowhere, Nebula demonstrates resilience and determination that ultimately becomes her greatest asset. Her unwavering commitment to healing her bond with Gamora, confiding in her newfound kin, and facing Thanos without hesitation solidifies her as a commendable hero within the MCU. Initially, many doubted that Nebula would evolve into one of the most formidable and endearing characters within the MCU, but Marvel Cinematic Universe’s skillful management of her storyline dispels any notion of error in their approach.
