The fights in this arc flow together smoothly, each one offering a distinct combat style and strategy. Beyond the main battles, Goku easily handles many of the standard Red Ribbon Army soldiers. The assault on Muscle Tower, featuring Goku and Android 8, is packed with constant, large-scale action. While the arc includes some slower episodes, it consistently delivers exciting and energetic fights.

Despite being the most debated installment in the Dragon Ball series, Dragon Ball GT has been gaining more appreciation lately. It takes a while for the show to really get going, but it ends with a particularly strong and fitting story arc: the Shadow Dragon Saga. This arc explores the consequences of humanity’s constant reliance on the Dragon Balls to fix their problems. The resulting corrupted Dragon Balls create powerful enemies that must be overcome to restore balance.
I’m really getting into the way this series is unfolding! Each episode seems to follow Goku and Pan as they face off against a new Shadow Dragon, and honestly, it’s a really satisfying structure. It could become a little predictable, but there’s never a shortage of exciting fights. The Shadow Dragons keep getting stronger, and the last few – Eis, Nuova, and Syn – take multiple episodes to deal with, which is pretty epic. My only slight gripe is that the battles themselves don’t always feel that different from one another.
Goku leads the charge in defeating each of the Shadow Dragons, but the ultimate battle against Omega Shenron sees all of Goku’s allies stepping up to help, including a quick reappearance of Gogeta. The Shadow Dragon Saga in Dragon Ball GT delivers a fitting conclusion to the series, filled with the exciting battles that made Dragon Ball so popular.
The Piccolo Jr. Saga Combines Tournament Action With A Major Showdown
As a huge Dragon Ball fan, I always get excited talking about the Piccolo Jr. Saga! It’s the epic conclusion to the original series, and honestly, it feels like everything builds to a whole new level after the 21st and 22nd World Tournaments. Seeing Goku and the Z Fighters reunite after three years of serious training is awesome, and the 23rd World Tournament is just non-stop action. What I really love is that you don’t quite know what to expect from everyone – how much stronger have they gotten? It makes the fights feel even more impactful than before. Plus, seeing Goku and Krillin finally learn to fly was a total game-changer!
The battles between Goku, Krillin, Tien, and Yamcha are all enjoyable, but the tournament truly culminates in an incredible final fight between Goku and Piccolo. This showdown is even more impressive than Goku’s battle with his father, Demon King Piccolo. While the earlier fights moved quickly, the final battle between Goku and Piccolo is a long and drawn-out struggle, filled with unexpected twists like Piccolo transforming into his massive Super Giant Form. It’s such a fantastic ending to the World Tournament that it’s understandable why Dragon Ball Z later moved away from holding them regularly.
The Piccolo Jr. Saga of Dragon Ball ends with a special anime addition that’s less dramatic than the World Tournament, but still offers exciting challenges for the characters. Goku and Chi-Chi team up, bravely facing Annin inside the dangerous Furnace of Eight Divisions. These episodes showcase a more imaginative style of fighting and emphasize the growing connection between Goku and Chi-Chi before they get married.
Dragon Ball Super’s Universe Survival Saga Assembles A Multiversal Battle Royale
Dragon Ball is known for its exciting action stories, but the Universe Survival Saga is its biggest challenge yet. This story arc lasts 55 episodes – over a third of the entire series – with 34 episodes focused on the Tournament of Power. This intense martial arts competition brings fighters from eight different universes together to battle for their very existence in a no-holds-barred free-for-all.
The Tournament of Power features an incredible 80 battles, many happening at the same time. There’s so much fighting that the story deliberately slows down to showcase it all. It’s far more action-packed than any tournament arc from previous Dragon Ball series, and it gives plenty of screen time to beloved characters like Krillin, Tien, and Master Roshi, alongside introducing a host of new and interesting opponents. While this complex structure could have easily fallen apart, the Tournament of Power actually delivers some of the most exciting and memorable fights in all of Dragon Ball Super.
Interestingly, the Dragon Ball Super manga tells a noticeably different story about the Tournament of Power, while still remaining a captivating version of events. Even the 21 episodes leading up to the tournament are packed with training and usually include at least one significant battle per episode.
