A popular theme in anime is a close-knit group of three characters who face challenges together. These trios, often found in action-packed series, are built on strong relationships and contrasting personalities. They support each other through tough times, and this dynamic is especially common in Shonen anime, where it can provide both humor and strength when battling villains.
Whether it’s for story reasons or just how the characters interact, certain groups of three often become the focus, overshadowing everyone else. These groups usually include the main character and their two closest friends, though that’s not always the case. Anime has featured many different trios, but only a few have truly stuck with viewers – here are five of the most memorable.
5) Ash, Brock, and Misty (Pokémon)

Since it first aired in 1997, this anime has produced numerous sequels and spin-offs, frequently featuring a central group of three characters. Despite these additions, none have resonated with audiences quite like the original trio. Their dynamic, filled with playful arguments like those between Ash and Misty, and lighthearted moments thanks to characters like Brook, always makes for entertaining adventures. Together, they travel through various regions, including Kanto and Johto, working towards their individual goals.
4) Eren, Mikasa, and Armin (Attack on Titan)

Many anime series feature energetic and often quarrelsome groups of three friends. But the trio in Attack on Titan stands out because their bond is built on a deep, long-lasting friendship forged through incredibly difficult experiences, starting from their childhood. They remained inseparable even after the devastating attack on their home, joining the Survey Corps together and facing numerous dangers. However, in the fourth season, Eren made a painful choice that led to their separation, all in an attempt to protect them.
3) Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura (Naruto)

Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura are one of the most beloved teams in Shonen anime and manga, despite the hardships and conflicts they’ve faced. From the strong, often competitive friendship between Naruto and Sasuke, to Sakura’s efforts to keep them together, they’ve shared many unforgettable moments. Even after spending years apart, they formed an incredibly powerful team during the Fourth Great Shinobi War, ultimately exceeding the abilities of their own teachers.
2) Gintonki, Shinpachi, and Kagura (Gintama)

Few anime groups are as hilariously unpredictable as Gintoki, Kagura, and Shinpachi, and that’s a big part of what makes Gintama so popular. Though Gintoki took them on as helpers, the three have become like a family. The show follows their everyday adventures, often with their dog, Sadaharu. No matter the task, things always go wrong in the funniest way possible, as they turn even serious situations into comedy.
1) Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji (One Piece)

Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji are widely considered one of the greatest teams in shonen anime. Known as the Monster Trio, these three are the most powerful members of the Straw Hat Pirates and always have each other’s backs. Their dynamic—whether it’s the playful competition between Zoro and Sanji or Luffy’s knack for chaotic situations—often leads to funny moments. Luffy can’t become King of the Pirates alone; he relies on his entire crew, especially Zoro and Sanji, who fight alongside him. When these three work together, it’s incredibly difficult for their opponents to win.
