Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball is famous for its incredibly powerful characters, including its hero, Goku. Most characters have the strength to destroy planets, making them truly formidable. Goku isn’t just skilled in martial arts; he constantly grows stronger throughout the series, especially after achieving his Super Saiyan transformation during the fight with Frieza. He’s trained relentlessly since then, reaching near-godlike power. While Goku has fought countless battles to defend Earth over the years, he isn’t invincible and can’t win every fight.
I’ve noticed our main character really struggles sometimes when trying to protect people and the world. It’s clear he can’t always handle the villains on his own – some are just too strong. There have been moments where he’s been clearly outmatched, but what’s amazing is how he always manages to bounce back, even stronger than before.
5) Raditz

Raditz and Goku’s reunion as long-lost brothers wasn’t heartwarming. Raditz, a villain, came to Earth with the goal of destroying it and finding Goku, as his people needed more warriors. He kidnapped Goku’s son, Gohan, hoping to control Goku, but this ultimately led to his downfall.
Goku, in his normal state, wasn’t strong enough to defeat Raidtz. He could only hold the weakened villain back after Gohan had attacked him. This gave Piccolo the opening he needed to fire his Special Beam Cannon, which tragically killed both Raidtz and Goku.
4) Cell

Goku, always eager to battle strong enemies, unexpectedly found himself facing Perfect Cell, who had become complete after absorbing Androids 17 and 18. They had fought briefly before the official Cell Games tournament, but Goku was ultimately pushed back and couldn’t win that first encounter.
Despite intense training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, Goku understood he hadn’t become strong enough to defeat the villain. He believed his son, Gohan, possessed the power they both lacked and was the planet’s true hope. Goku ultimately sacrificed himself to prevent Cell from destroying the Earth, allowing Gohan to unleash a devastating Kamehameha wave and save everyone.
3) Jiren

Dragon Ball Super’s Tournament of Power featured many strong fighters from different universes, but Jiren proved to be Goku’s biggest challenge. As the strongest warrior in Universe 11, Jiren was even more powerful than its God of Destruction.
To protect his universe, Goku surpassed his already incredible power, even after achieving Ultra Instinct. However, he still couldn’t defeat Jiren on his own. Eventually, Goku, Frieza, and Android 17 joined forces in the final moments of the battle. Universe 7 ultimately won, but it was Android 17 who delivered the final blow and remained standing.
2) Zamasu

Before gaining immortality through the Super Dragon Balls and switching bodies with Goku, Zamasu wasn’t as powerful as Goku. His actions led to the destruction of Future Trunks’ timeline, forcing Goku and Vegeta to travel back in time to prevent further devastation.
Zamasu’s immense power nearly led to the destruction of the world, and even Goku couldn’t defeat him at first. After their initial fight, Goku and Vegeta were forced to retreat to their own time. Ultimately, Goku had to ask Master Zeno, the all-powerful Omni King, to wipe out the entire timeline in order to stop Zamasu’s destructive actions.
1) Beerus

Beerus, the God of Destruction from Universe 7, eventually became a valuable ally to the Z Fighters. However, he initially appeared as the main villain in the first story arc of Dragon Ball Super. Driven by a dream, Beerus traveled the universe searching for a Super Saiyan God, and ultimately found Goku – though Goku wasn’t quite what Beerus had in mind.
I watched as Goku, with help from Shenron and the other Saiyans, finally achieved the Super Saiyan God transformation and stepped up to face Beerus. It was incredible to see him reach that level of power, but even as a god, he couldn’t compete with the God of Destruction. Goku fought his hardest to defend Earth, but Beerus won almost effortlessly, barely even trying.
