When Sony entered the home video game market with the PlayStation, it was a huge hit, quickly surpassing its rivals and establishing a strong position for the company. Over its lifespan, the console boasted over 4,000 games, but many excellent titles didn’t receive the attention they deserved. This happened frequently, and we’ve dug through the system’s history to highlight five of the best games that most players missed out on when they were originally released.
1) Vagrant Story

Released in 2000, Vagrant Story is a truly unique action RPG from Square. Though it’s gained more recognition with recent re-releases, it didn’t receive much attention initially, which is unfortunate considering its exceptional design. It breaks from typical RPGs by removing things like townspeople to talk to or shops to visit. Instead, the game centers around customizing and crafting weapons, solving puzzles, and strategic combat. Vagrant Story is a fantastic RPG with beautiful graphics and a captivating story, but it was unfortunately overlooked due to the popularity of games like Chrono Cross and Final Fantasy IX, leading many to consider it underrated.
2) Vib-Ribbon

Most rhythm games follow a similar formula, but 1999’s Vib-Ribbon, a PlayStation game originally released in Japan, was different. It actually began as a Mercedes-Benz advertisement before becoming a full game. What made it special was its ability to generate levels based on any audio CD you put in the PlayStation. The game would create levels using simple, geometric shapes and a character named Vibri, and players guided Vibri to the beat of the music. It’s a quirky and surprisingly enjoyable experience. Unfortunately, because it was only released in Japan, it remained largely unknown internationally.
3) Jumping Flash!

As platformer games evolved into 3D, Jumping Flash! played a key role. Released in 1995, it’s considered the first true 3D platformer, influencing many games that came after. Players control Robbit, a robotic rabbit, and the core gameplay revolves around jumping. While the game received positive reviews and a sequel, rapid advancements in 3D technology quickly led to it being surpassed by the titles it helped inspire – a common occurrence in the fast-paced world of video games.
4) Ghost In The Shell

The Ghost in the Shell franchise includes many video games, starting with a PlayStation 1 title released in 1997. This third-person shooter is based on the popular 1995 anime film, even featuring the same voice actors, though it tells a completely new story. It’s a fantastic game that feels true to the Ghost in the Shell universe, and widely considered one of the best video game adaptations of Japanese animation and comics. However, anime wasn’t as popular in North America during the 1990s, so the game didn’t receive the attention it deserved. Because of this, Ghost in the Shell is now seen as a hidden gem – a classic that wasn’t fully appreciated when it first came out.
5) Future Cop: LAPD

Mechs were hugely popular in the 1990s, and the PlayStation 1 had plenty of games featuring them. One early example was 1998’s Future Cop: LAPD. In this game, players controlled the X1-Alpha, a police mech that could transform into either a quick, hovering vehicle or a powerful combat robot. It cleverly combined different styles of gameplay and was well-received for its innovative design. Although many players have forgotten about it, Future Cop: LAPD is a hidden gem among older PlayStation titles and would be fantastic as a modern remake.
