5 Movie Remakes That Are Better Than the Original (That Aren’t The Thing or The Fly)

Remakes often get a bad reputation, and for good reason. People usually expect they won’t be as good as the original, especially since the original was something completely new or a first-time adaptation. And honestly, that’s often true. It’s similar to sequels – while rare gems like The Godfather Part II or Terminator 2: Judgment Day exist, most sequels, like The Godfather Part III or Terminator Genisys, don’t live up to the original.

Remakes often don’t live up to the originals, but sometimes they truly shine – like the updated versions of John Carpenter’s The Thing and David Cronenberg’s The Fly. Those are considered excellent, and we’re going to look at five more remakes that are also significant improvements over the films they’re based on.

5) 3:10 to Yuma

Before appearing in roles that didn’t fully showcase their talents in Thor: Love and Thunder, Christian Bale and Russell Crowe starred in a standout Western from the 2000s. Many consider The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford to be one of the best in the genre, and it’s a strong contender for the very best.

I’d recommend 3:10 to Yuma. It has amazing acting and is expertly directed by James Mangold, who also directed the excellent Logan. While the original film is good, the remake really surpasses it when it comes to developing believable and complex characters.

4) True Grit

The Coen brothers revisit the classic Western True Grit, originally starring John Wayne. While the original film’s appeal largely depended on how much audiences liked Wayne himself – it was very much a showcase for his performance.

This new version stays much closer to the original novel by Charles Portis. A key example is its strong focus on the character of Mattie Ross, which launched Hailee Steinfeld’s career. While Jeff Bridges’ slow, quiet delivery might not appeal to all viewers, most will find it fitting for the role.

3) Invasion of the Body Snatchers

Jack Finney’s 1954 novel, The Body Snatchers, has been adapted for the screen four times, and three of those adaptations are truly excellent. While the 1956 original stands out as a classic sci-fi horror film, and Abel Ferrara’s 1993 version is a gripping and unsettling thriller, the 1978 adaptation is widely considered the best.

This film expertly creates a sense of isolation and despair. It steadily builds tension throughout, culminating in a particularly intense final act. And when it comes to memorably grim endings in sci-fi horror remakes, this one is among the very best, ranking alongside the classic The Thing.

2) Scarface

Both the 1932 and 1983 versions of Scarface are great films, and it’s understandable if you prefer the older one. However, Brian De Palma’s version is arguably more ambitious and definitely more visually striking.

Let me tell you, three hours flew by watching this film. Al Pacino is absolutely magnetic, and the script is just relentlessly cool – it’s honestly a perfect example of the classic gangster rise-and-fall story. If you want a movie that really captures the over-the-top vibe of the 80s, you can’t do much better than Brian De Palma’s Scarface. It’s a true classic.

1) The Blob

Following his success with A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, Chuck Russell created a thrilling update to The Blob, fitting alongside classics like The Thing and The Fly. Much like those remakes, the 1988 version of The Blob surpasses the original, primarily because the 1950s film wasn’t particularly strong to begin with.

This movie excels at surprising and disturbing its viewers. It builds a charming, idyllic small-town setting and fills it with likable characters, then unexpectedly unleashes the Blob on them. Like the classic film The Thing, it features impressive practical effects that make each death genuinely shocking. This remake smartly retains the best elements of the original – like the iconic movie theater scene – while changing enough to feel fresh and improved.
