5 Movies Every Back To The Future Fan Must Watch

As a huge film buff, I have to say the Back to the Future trilogy is just iconic. It really feels like the 80s, but it also cleverly plays with nostalgia for the 50s and even the Old West. Plus, it throws in nods to different genres, which is awesome. A lot of people – and I agree – think it’s one of the best trilogies ever made, with each film building on what came before. And the first movie? Forget about remaking that! It’s just one of those truly special, one-of-a-kind films that you can’t replicate.

While the Back to the Future movies are truly special, that makes it hard to find other films that feel quite as satisfying. Its unique blend of time travel and adventure is hard to copy. But if you’re a fan, there are still some movies out there that capture similar ideas or just have that same fun, ’80s vibe.

5) Everything Everywhere All At Once (2022)

Though truly great science fiction films are rare, Everything Everywhere All at Once is definitely one of them. The movie stars Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan as a Chinese-American couple who own a laundromat and are being audited by the IRS. This leads to an incredible, reality-bending adventure that focuses on their family, including their daughter. Featuring Stephanie Hsu, James Hong, and Jamie Lee Curtis, the film won the Academy Award for Best Picture, among other accolades.

Though seemingly different, Everything Everywhere All at Once and Back to the Future both use clever science fiction concepts to delve into questions of who we are and the importance of family. Both films are emotionally resonant, yet they also make you think critically about what’s happening on screen. Even without the nostalgic charm of Back to the Future, it’s a movie fans of that classic will likely enjoy.

4) Groundhog Day (1993)

While not a traditional time travel movie, Groundhog Day has become a comedy favorite thanks to its clever use of a repeating time loop. Bill Murray plays Phil Connors, a grumpy weatherman who gets stuck reliving the same Groundhog Day over and over while reporting on the annual festivities in a small town. The film also stars Andie MacDowell, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Brian Doyle-Murray, and is just as popular as classics like Back to the Future.

If you enjoyed the time-travel trilogy and haven’t yet seen Groundhog Day, you really should. It’s a fantastic movie with a clever time-loop story and a brilliant comedic performance by Bill Murray. What’s great is that it doesn’t get bogged down in complicated sci-fi; it’s a genuinely heartwarming film that just happens to use time travel as a way to tell its story. That makes it a perfect choice for anyone who loves Back to the Future and is looking for a similar feel-good experience.

3) Pleasantville (1998)

Gary Ross’s 1998 film, Pleasantville, isn’t as well-known as it should be, considering its talented cast and visually impressive style. The movie stars Tobey Maguire and Reese Witherspoon as two siblings who are mysteriously transported into a seemingly perfect 1950s television show. As they adjust to life in this idyllic small town, their presence slowly begins to change the residents, disrupting their seemingly flawless world and making it more complicated.

Although Pleasantville and Back to the Future are different films, they share a similar idea: modern teenagers experiencing and impacting the culture of the 1950s. While Pleasantville has a slightly more mature tone, fans who enjoy the nostalgia of Back to the Future are likely to appreciate it as well.

2) Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989)

While Back to the Future sparked a lot of interest in time travel movies, very few films capture the same lighthearted feeling. Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, with Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves, is a notable exception. The movie centers around two laid-back high school students who get a time machine to help them with a history assignment, only to discover they’re meant to form a band that will positively impact the future.

While both Bill & Ted and Back to the Future involve time travel, they do it in very different ways. Both movies are fast-paced and enjoyable explorations of the concept, offering a lighthearted take on time travel that’s surprisingly uncommon. Bill & Ted’s more comedic approach makes it a refreshing sci-fi classic, and it’s also subtly educational.

1) Blast From The Past (1999)

Despite featuring a talented cast including Brendan Fraser, Alicia Silverstone, Christopher Walken, and Sissy Spacek, the 1999 film Blast from the Past wasn’t a critical or commercial success and has largely faded from public memory. The movie tells the story of Adam, a man raised in a fallout shelter during the Cold War, who comes out into the late 1990s and struggles to adjust to modern life.

As a big movie buff, I always appreciate a clever spin on a classic idea. While Blast from the Past doesn’t involve any time travel itself, it’s a really fun companion piece to Back to the Future. It basically flips that movie’s concept on its head – instead of someone going to the past, it’s about a guy from the past trying to navigate our world. It’s definitely more of a comedy than Back to the Future, but if you love that film, you’ll have a great time with this one. It might not be the most famous movie out there, but it’s a perfect watch for fans like me.
