5 Movies Every Pirates of the Caribbean Fan Should Watch

The Pirates of the Caribbean films used to be incredibly successful in theaters. While the first movie is still considered the best by critics, even the later installments have their enjoyable moments. Even Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, which retreads familiar ground from the original, offers some exciting scenes. This is because the Pirates movies create a captivating and over-the-top world where characters resolve conflicts with sword fights and pistols – a fantastical take on a real historical period.

If you’ve enjoyed all the Pirates of the Caribbean films and are looking for something similar, what should you watch next? While movies like Cutthroat Island or Pirates (with Walter Matthau) might satisfy your craving, the following films truly capture the same adventurous spirit as the Pirates of the Caribbean series, even more so than other pirate movies.

5) Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

Indiana Jones is the ultimate action hero, constantly escaping dangerous situations. Of all his films, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade feels the most similar to Pirates.

I’ve always thought Jack Sparrow shines brightest when he’s bouncing off other characters, like we saw in On Stranger Tides and Dead Men Tell No Tales. He’s great as a lead, sure, but those movies proved a trio dynamic really works for him. It reminds me of Indiana Jones – The Last Crusade was fantastic because of the chemistry between Indy and his dad, not just a romantic partner. And speaking of fathers, it was so cool to finally meet Jack’s dad in At World’s End! It just shows that pairing these heroes with family or strong companions elevates the story.

4) The Mask of Zorro

If you enjoy action movies featuring sword fights between rebels and soldiers – like those in the Pirates of the Caribbean films, particularly Dead Man’s Chest – then The Mask of Zorro is a great choice. It was a popular film in the 1990s but hasn’t received as much attention lately, considering its success.

It’s a really enjoyable film, boosted by energetic performances from Antonio Banderas and Anthony Hopkins, and features compelling villains you’ll genuinely dislike. The sword fights are exciting and reminiscent of the classic battles from Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.

3) The Mummy

It’s unusual for an actor to receive a Best Actor Oscar nomination for a big-budget action movie, but Johnny Depp was nominated for his performance in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Many people who grew up in the 1990s also believe Brendan Fraser deserved a nomination for his role in The Mummy.

Similar to the dynamic with Jack Sparrow, Rick O’Connell benefited from Fraser’s knack for both comedy and believable action. The Mummy also creates a world where the dangers feel both fantastical and genuinely threatening. Both the first Pirates film and The Mummy feature a curse, highlighting a clear connection between the two. Now, the question is whether the new legacy sequel can recapture that same magic. Hopefully, it will.

2) Jungle Cruise

As the Pirates of the Caribbean movies began to finish, Disney tried to create similar adventures that would be just as popular. While films like Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and John Carter captured a similar feeling, they unfortunately didn’t achieve the same level of success.

Disney has tried several times to turn its theme park rides into successful movies, with Jungle Cruise being their most recent effort. While Jungle Cruise performed better than Prince of Persia and John Carter, it still didn’t achieve the same level of success. Considering it came out during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021 and a sequel isn’t planned, Disney likely wasn’t satisfied with how it did, even on Disney+. Despite being an adaptation of a popular ride, Jungle Cruise didn’t leave a lasting impression. If you enjoy the Pirates of the Caribbean films on Disney+, though, this is definitely worth checking out next.

1) Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World

Since Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World was released in the same year as Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, it’s not surprising that the two films have a similar visual style. With its intense cannon battles, Master and Commander often feels like another Pirates movie.

This Pirates film feels different – it’s a grounded drama, not a fantastical adventure with exaggerated characters. While it features some intense action, it’s a surprisingly realistic take on the pirate genre. It’s a beautiful and often overlooked classic from the early 2000s, made even stronger by outstanding performances from Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany, who reunite after their work on A Beautiful Mind.
