The Marvel Cinematic Universe often shows its characters enjoying lighthearted moments. For example, after the Avengers defeat Hydra and secure Loki’s scepter in Avengers: Age of Ultron, they celebrate with a party. Afterward, a playful challenge begins when Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir, is left on a table. Each hero tries to lift it, but only Captain America can even budge it. Later, after Vision is created, he easily lifts the hammer, as he hasn’t yet done anything to make him unworthy. Thor assumes that’s the end of the surprises, but Captain America shocks him in Avengers: Endgame by summoning Mjolnir and using it against Thanos.
With the introduction of the multiverse, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is seeing more and more heroes emerge. It’s likely we’ll discover others who are strong enough to lift Mjolnir, the most powerful hammer in the universe. Here are five Marvel characters from before the MCU who could absolutely wield it.
5) Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man

Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy remains a benchmark for superhero films, largely because of how it depicts Peter Parker. As a typical high school outsider, he gains extraordinary powers from a radioactive spider bite. Instead of using these powers for himself, he dedicates himself to helping others, becoming a source of inspiration for the citizens of New York City.
Peter certainly isn’t perfect – he’s made errors like pursuing and ultimately letting his uncle’s supposed killer die. But Spider-Man is his own harshest critic, which makes him uniquely suited to handle a powerful weapon from Asgard. Plus, he already understands the responsibility that comes with having great power.
4) Cyclops

Everyone remembers Wolverine as the X-Men’s leader in the first three Fox movies – it often felt like they couldn’t accomplish much without him. However, Professor X actually had more faith in Scott Summers, also known as Cyclops, than anyone else.
Cyclops is a gifted leader who always steps up in dangerous situations, despite struggling with jealousy. It’s unfortunate his story ends in X-Men: The Last Stand, but James Marsden is returning to the role in Avengers: Doomsday, where his character could meet Thor.
3) Ghost Rider

At the beginning of Ghost Rider, Johnny Blaze just wants to enjoy motorcycle riding and performing for crowds. But he’s secretly struggling with a lot of pain, and that hidden struggle comes back to haunt him when the deal he made with the devil years ago transforms him into the Ghost Rider, a spirit of vengeance. This transformation sends Johnny down a dangerous path, leaving destruction and loss wherever he goes.
At first glance, Ghost Rider doesn’t seem worthy of wielding Mjolnir. He’s a killer who rarely sees the best in people. However, deep down, he still has a good heart. He only made a deal with Mephistopheles because he desperately wanted to save his father from a fatal illness.
2) Silver Surfer

At the beginning of Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, the Fantastic Four are enjoying their status as celebrated heroes. Everything changes when a strange alien, the Silver Surfer, arrives with a warning about an even bigger threat. The Silver Surfer proves to be a powerful opponent, easily handling both the Fantastic Four and Doctor Doom, but he doesn’t seem to want to fight.
At the end of the film, the Silver Surfer chooses to help the Fantastic Four protect Earth by fighting Galactus. Though it appears he dies in the battle, his sacrifice is worthwhile, allowing life on Earth to continue. His willingness to give everything for strangers makes the Silver Surfer a truly heroic figure.
1) Kitty Pryde

Kitty Pryde is first seen as a student at Xavier’s School in the first two X-Men films, where she’s simply trying to fit in. She really gets to shine in The Last Stand, proving her courage by immediately trying to save everyone she can, even those who fear her because she’s a mutant.
When the incredibly powerful mutant Juggernaut targets Jimmy – a human being exploited for a mutant cure – Kitty Pryde bravely confronts him. She manages to slow him down just long enough to ensure Jimmy’s safety. Interestingly, the mystical hammer Mjolnir, known for only allowing worthy individuals to wield it, wouldn’t even challenge Kitty.
