As a DC Comics fan, I have to say 2025 was a phenomenal year! The Absolute editions, which started gaining traction in 2024, really took off – we’re talking sales numbers easily hitting six figures! Beyond that, the regular comic lineup was consistently strong. Titles like Justice League Unlimited, Superman, Action Comics, Detective Comics, and Green Lantern were hits with both readers and critics. The Black Label series were excellent as always, and the news about Vertigo coming back got everyone incredibly excited. But the year really ended with a bang thanks to the event comic DC K.O., which was cleverly set up by DC All-In #1. What a stylish and impressive finish to an amazing year for DC!

2025 had a lot of event-based comic books released, many from Marvel, and some were quite good. But DC K.O. stands out as exceptional. DC consistently delivers fantastic events, and this one is a prime example of their strength in this area. It was easily the best event of the past year, and here are five reasons why.

5) Excellent Main Series

Like all event comics, DC K.O. relies heavily on its core series, and thankfully, that series has been consistently strong from the start, thanks to the creative team of Scott Snyder, Javi Fernandez, and Xermanico. While some readers pointed out a minor issue with how the first fight was structured, the quality of the issues themselves hasn’t been questioned. Snyder excels at crafting large-scale, exciting events, and DC K.O. perfectly embodies that strength. The artwork by Fernandez and Xermanico is also top-notch, with meticulous detail that makes each issue visually appealing. This Darkseid story is a refreshing departure from typical narratives – it’s not another quest for the Anti-Life Equation, which is a major plus. The series consistently subverts expectations, and that’s what makes it truly stand out.

4) Character Development

What I’m really loving about this story is how deeply it explores the characters. Seeing Superman and Lex Luthor’s relationship fall apart after years of working together is fascinating, and it’s setting up some really compelling future conflicts for both of them. The fight between Superman and Captain Atom really gave us new insight into Captain Atom, and I was thrilled to see Zatanna overcome her fears in her encounter with Harley Quinn – it felt like a huge step for her! And that Red Hood/Joker issue? Incredible. It finally gave Jason Todd some much-needed closure. Honestly, every issue feels meaningful because it adds something new to these characters, and that’s what makes this story so special. It’s not just exciting; it’s a story that genuinely serves the characters.

3) Fight Month

The DC K.O. storyline is built around a fighting tournament, so it features a lot of action. This led to ‘Fight Month,’ a series of special issues and one-shots focusing on characters like Aquaman, Superman, and The Flash. ‘Fight Month’ was a huge success because the fights weren’t just exciting—they also revealed a lot about each character’s personality. The creative team cleverly incorporated elements from fighting video games, which was a fantastic addition. DC has always been good at tie-in games, and ‘Fight Month’ perfectly showcases that strength. Each issue is a fun read for fans and has enriched the overall story.

2) Great Build-Up

DC’s recent publishing strategy, starting with the DC All-In #1 launch in summer 2024, has been incredibly successful. The lead-up to DC K.O. has been nearly perfect, demonstrating the importance of strong event preparation. Titles like Superman, Justice League Unlimited, Batman/Superman: World’s Finest, and The Flash have all contributed to the story, with arcs like “We Are Yesterday,” “Darkseid Legion,” and “Bad Moon Rising” establishing key details. Several Justice League one-shots, including Justice League: The Omega Act and Justice League: Dark Tomorrow, have further expanded the narrative. By utilizing top talent like Mark Waid and Joshua Williamson, DC has created a fantastic foundation for this event, and it’s clearly paid off.

1) Engaging Main Plot

As a DC fan, I have to say, the recent stories have been fantastic, and DC K.O. continues that trend. Darkseid narratives can sometimes feel predictable, but this one genuinely surprised me. It’s a fresh take on the character, and that’s really special. The core concept – heroes battling for the power to defeat a Darkseid who’s already won – sounds simple, but it’s executed brilliantly. The creative team – Snyder, Williamson, Waid, and everyone involved – are clearly throwing everything they have into making this event gripping and unpredictable. Every single issue, even the standalone ‘Fight Month’ ones, has a little something extra that builds towards the larger story. It’s a non-stop thrill ride; there’s absolutely no wasted space or filler.
