2025 was a fantastic year for DC Comics, but Superman truly stood out. The year kicked off strong with the release of the Superman movie in July, a successful launch for James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe in theaters. The film revitalized the character’s place in popular culture. Beyond the big screen, DC also released a steady stream of excellent Superman comics, including one-off stories, limited series, and his regular ongoing title. These comics, particularly the Superman series itself, have been incredibly well-received and have significantly contributed to the ongoing narrative of the DC Multiverse in 2025.
The Superman comic has been a standout hit in 2025, quickly becoming one of the year’s best solo series. It consistently delivered fantastic stories featuring Superman and his supporting characters, both heroes and villains, thanks to strong writing and incredible artwork. These elements combined to make Superman the top solo title for its readers last year.
5) Doomsday as the Time Trapper

In 2024, the villain Time Trapper returned, bringing back memories of Superman’s early days as Superboy fighting alongside the Legion of Superheroes. Surprisingly, this version of the Time Trapper was revealed to be Doomsday. Over time, the monster famous for killing Superman evolved, gaining the power to control time. He returned not to fight, but to warn Superman about a devastating future, asking to be killed so he could ascend to godhood. The reason for his desire to become a god was revealed in 2025 through the DC K.O. storyline. In a twist, the Time Trapper became an ally to Superman and the Justice League. Writer Joshua Williamson has done an excellent job reimagining Doomsday, making him a standout character in the Superman comic this year.
4) The Return of Superboy-Prime and the Legion of Superheroes

Recent issues of Superman brought back two unexpected characters. First, Superboy-Prime was revealed to be alive, and Superman sought his help – with the Time Trapper’s guidance – to find surviving members of the Legion of Superheroes. They were under attack by an evil version of the Legion, led by Darkseid, who was hunting down the team across different universes. Seeing a reformed Superboy-Prime team up with Superman was a highlight for fans. The return of the Legion of Superheroes is set to be a major storyline in the DC Universe in 2026, as the publisher attempts to re-establish the team’s popularity. There’s even talk of a potential Superboy-Prime Legion series, which would be exciting!
3) The DC K.O. Build-Up and Tie-In Issues

Superman is central to the DC K.O. event, with storylines beginning in his own comic. A three-part story called “Legion of Darkseid” saw Superman and Prime team up to rescue Booster Gold and set the stage for Justice League Unlimited and the introduction of the Quantum Quorum. This story was a huge success and helped build anticipation for DC K.O.. Starting in October, Superman has also released issues directly connected to the event, offering key scenes – like a team-up between Superwoman and Prime, and revealing Lex Luthor’s plans. Every issue since July has been excellent, making the series a fan favorite.
2) The Art

Since its 2023 launch, Superman has consistently featured strong artwork, but the art really shined in 2025. The addition of Dan Mora in 2024 was a perfect fit; he’s an incredibly dedicated artist known for delivering top-quality work on two issues every month. His work on Superman is fantastic, characterized by clean, detailed lines that create visually stunning pages. While Mora didn’t draw every issue in 2025 – Eddy Barrows filled in at times – the year also showcased the talents of Hayden Sherman, who is having a particularly successful year. Superman currently boasts work from three of the best artists in the comic book industry.
1) Williamson Understands Superman

Joshua Williamson first gained recognition for his work on titles like The Flash, and in 2023, he took on the role of writer for Superman. Since then, he’s consistently delivered strong stories for the Man of Steel, with 2025 being a particularly impressive year. Williamson seems to have a unique understanding of Superman, and he also excels at portraying Lex Luthor and Lois Lane – crucial elements for any Superman writer. His storylines and character development have been outstanding, captivating readers throughout the year. He’s truly elevated the book, helping Superman become one of the best comics available.
