Now is an excellent time to be a science fiction enthusiast! The recently released movie, Project Hail Mary, has become a huge success, earning $141 million worldwide in its opening weekend – exceeding all expectations. It’s also receiving fantastic reviews from both critics and audiences, including those familiar with the original Andy Weir novel. Many are already calling it one of the best films of the year, and even a masterpiece of science fiction.
Since the movie Project Hail Mary was so popular, many viewers are now searching for similar science fiction stories, and comics are a great place to find them. Comics excel at telling incredible sci-fi adventures, particularly those set in space. Here are five sci-fi comics we recommend for fans of Project Hail Mary – we think they’d even impress the movie’s protagonist!
5) Descender and Ascender

If you liked the focus on friendship in Project Hail Mary, you should check out the Descender and Ascender comics. These series are both written by Jeff Lemire with art by Dustin Nguyen, and published by Image Comics. While technically two separate stories, Ascender is a sequel to Descender. Descender centers on TIM-21, a young robot trying to survive in a universe where all robots are outlawed. Ascender then follows Mila, the daughter of characters from Descender, in a world where magic has taken the place of technology.
The Descender/Ascender series takes place in a harsh and perilous universe, but it’s also filled with exciting adventures and beautiful depictions of space. The story is made compelling by its intricate relationships and friendships. While it often feels like a blend of fantasy and science fiction—and it really does include aspects of both—this combination only adds to its appeal and keeps you hooked.
4) The Incal

Written by Alejandro Jodorowsky and illustrated by Moebius, The Incal is a science fiction graphic novel. It’s a bit more focused on technical details than some space operas, but it still features alien encounters and a relatable main character, similar to Ryland Grace in Project Hail Mary. The story centers on John Difool, a struggling private investigator who becomes entangled with a powerful, ancient crystal called the Incal, leading to a conflict with the galaxy’s most formidable warrior, the Metabaron.
Readers who enjoyed Project Hail Mary will likely appreciate The Incal because of the incredibly high stakes. Like the protagonist in Project Hail Mary, John isn’t just fighting to save himself – the fate of the entire universe rests on his shoulders. While the problem isn’t exactly the same – figuring out why stars are dimming – John faces enormous pressure and responsibility.
3) Saga

To be fair, Saga and Project Hail Mary aren’t really alike. However, Saga is a fantastic sci-fi comic, and fans will likely enjoy its compelling characters, complex relationships, and unique aliens.
I’m completely captivated by this story! It centers around a family constantly fleeing across the galaxy, and the reason behind it is just heartbreakingly beautiful. You see, one parent is a soldier from a super-advanced, tech-driven race, while the other comes from a world steeped in magic. They fall in love and have a child, but their love is forbidden because their people are locked in a huge galactic war. They’re essentially outlaws, with nowhere to truly call home. It’s a really grand, sweeping story, and honestly, it’s hit me right in the feels more than once. You can find it published by Image Comics, and I highly recommend checking it out!
2) Sentient

Jeff Lemire teams up with artist Gabriel Hernandez Walta for Sentient, a new story from TKO Studios. It follows a group of children on a spaceship after a disaster wipes out all the adults. The ship’s AI must now keep them safe as it navigates the galaxy, all while evading pursuers and other threats.
The story centers on the touching connection between the ship’s AI, VALARIE, and a group of children. Their unusual bond is deeply moving and will likely remind readers of the relationship between Grace and Rocky in Project Hail Mary.
1) Low

Survival is central to the story of Low, a comic book series by Rick Remender and Greg Tocchini. Set in a distant future, the series takes place on Earth after the sun has expanded, making the surface uninhabitable. Two million people now live in an underwater city called Salus, and they’ve been sending out probes for thousands of years in search of a new planet to call home. Finally, one of those probes returns.
“Low” features impressive world-building and a compelling story about overcoming hardship and the strength of the human spirit. Readers who enjoyed Project Hail Mary will likely appreciate its themes of survival and self-sacrifice.
