An outstanding main character is just one piece of the puzzle. Every exceptional video game also boasts an equally compelling ensemble to drive the story. It’s not uncommon for these supporting characters to be so captivating that you can’t help but wish you could control them instead. This is when spin-off games featuring side characters come into play. The gaming industry has seen many such titles, like the upcoming Hollow Knight: Silksong starring Hornet, and The Witcher 4, which will hand over the reins to Ciri after Geralt.
Concurrently, there exists an abundance of fascinating supporting characters who haven’t had their individual games yet. These characters could be protagonists in prequels or even spearhead franchises moving forward. Hence, if you appreciate compelling side characters, here are our top choices for those that should have their own game.
5) Joon-gi Han – Yakuza
In the game Yakuza: Like A Dragon, Joon-ki Han is initially portrayed as a highly skilled gangster who is both stoic and quick-witted, excelling in hand-to-hand combat. Initially, players encounter him as a formidable boss to defeat. However, later in the narrative, Joon-ki Han teams up with Ichiban’s crew, providing players with his exclusive Hitman Job that they can utilize to their advantage.
From the perspective of an ardent fan, I find myself captivated by the character of Joon-gi Han, the masterful assassin in this fascinating world. Armed with guns and a swift karambit, he demonstrates a unique blend of combat techniques that not only deal tremendous damage but also inflict intriguing status effects.
In my humble opinion, Joon-gi Han would make an excellent protagonist for a spin-off game, tailored to emphasize the legacy beat ’em up style rather than the current turn-based system. The gameplay mechanics could be reimagined to showcase his impressive skills and captivating storyline effectively.
Beyond the gameplay aspects, Joon-gi Han is skillfully written as a complex character with a rich backstory. Introduced as a gangster connected to the Geomijul and the Korean mafia, his arrival on Ichiban’s crew offers tantalizing glimpses into his enigmatic persona, leaving us eager for more revelations about this captivating character.
A game in the Yakuza series, titled “Origins of Geomijul,” could be an exciting spin-off, focusing on Joon-gi Han’s backstory. Known for his charisma and presence, these qualities make him a perfect fit as the protagonist in a Yakuza game.
4) Vergil – Devil May Cry
Vergil isn’t a recent addition to the Devil May Cry series – he’s had a hand in most of the main games’ plots. However, even though extra content has allowed us to control him, Vergil has never been the franchise’s primary character. In fact, during Devil May Cry 5, he served as the main villain. Following a DLC update, he became playable once more.
In comparison to Dante, Vergil possesses an equally impressive skill set and character traits, earning him the title of the top character within the Devil May Cry universe by many fans. Given that he is Dante’s brother, his power is on par with the best. You could say Vergil serves a role similar to Vegeta in the Dragon Ball Z series, as he has never had the chance to shine in the spotlight. With all the qualities of a protagonist already apparent, it’s high time for Devil May Cry to present Vergil favorably and positively.
In an upcoming Devil May Cry title or side story, it would be intriguing to delve into Vergil’s character development. This could involve him making amends for past mistakes, deepening relationships with Dante and Nero, and taking on a significant heroic role within the narrative this time around. Such a tale would undoubtedly prove captivating.
3) Tomorrow – Death Stranding 2
Towards the conclusion of Death Stranding 2, a fresh disaster is narrowly prevented. In one of the last scenes, Tomorrow is depicted wearing a porter’s outfit while still exhibiting her powers. This scene suggests that Tomorrow will carry on Sam’s mission. Exactly how she’ll do so remains to be seen, and for that, Tomorrow might require her own game. Given that Sam will play a lesser role, it’s clear that Tomorrow would likely be the main character in Death Stranding 3, assuming there is one.
At present, Kojima Productions is developing two fresh video games: Physint and OD. While Physint is only in its initial stages of development and is slated for release on the PlayStation 6, Hideo Kojima has suggested that Death Stranding 3 might be under consideration, though he may not direct it and it’s not currently part of his immediate plans. Despite being designed for a specific audience, the Death Stranding series has proven to be incredibly popular.
With Tomorrow now endowed with abilities as a courier, an array of exciting, innovative gameplay elements can emerge for future enjoyment. Although it’s still early days, incorporating Tomorrow as the lead character in a potential sequel to Death Stranding 3 seems like a logical decision.
2) Zeus – Hades
In the story of Hades, Zeus is one of several deities residing in Olympus who aids Zagreus as he embarks on his quest to leave the underworld. As Zagreus battles to escape, his relatives, such as his uncle Zeus, bestow him with powerful advantages. The narrative of Hades follows Zagreus’ journey to find his mother and the hardships encountered along the way. It’s worth noting that the universe of Hades has a rich history dating back hundreds of years prior to the beginning of the game.
It’s only logical that a prequel focusing on the character of Zeus could be intriguing. In the hypothetical sequel to “Hades 2”, Chronos, the Titan of Time and Zeus’ father, emerges seeking vengeance against the Olympians. This leads us to ponder, what was the story behind his imprisonment? Each interpretation of Greek mythology presented in games and shows varies slightly. Since “Hades” already has its unique narrative, it would be fitting for it to have a distinct backstory as well. Consequently, if crafting an engaging prequel is the aim, a storyline featuring Zeus prior to “Hades” seems like a compelling pitch for a new game.
1) Quiet – Metal Gear Solid 5
The Metal Gear series has a unique knack for introducing increasingly bizarre supporting characters, with Ocelot, Skull Face, Psycho Mantis, and many others pushing the envelope. Yet, among these intriguing sidekicks, Quiet from Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain stands out. Initially dispatched to eliminate Big Boss, she survives an accident that leaves her with severe burns. A parasitic treatment heals her injuries, but unfortunately, it results in her ability to breathe and consume liquids only through her skin. This is why she is typically seen wearing minimal clothing; otherwise, she would asphyxiate.
In another attempt to kill Snake, Quiet is overpowered and confined at Mother Base. Later, she switches allegiances and becomes part of Big Boss’s team, known as Diamond Dogs. As for her role, Quiet is an exceptional sniper, with a rare ability to hardly ever miss her target, even from great distances of hundreds of meters. Since the game Metal Gear emphasizes stealth, it seems fitting that she takes center stage in a spin-off title.
She possesses stealthy assassination skills, is adept at moving silently through bases, expertly wields weapons, and boasts the necessary knowledge for a well-rounded character. If Konami were to expand the Metal Gear series in future, creating a spin-off featuring Quiet could certainly make the process smoother.
