As a gamer, I’ve noticed a cool pattern: when a game is a hit, it often gets sequels, and those successful series sometimes branch out into spinoffs. These spinoffs usually share characters, the world, or how the gameplay works with the original, and every now and then, they actually end up being better than the game that started it all! It’s not super common, but when it happens, it’s a big deal. Just because a spinoff is amazing doesn’t mean the original game was bad – it must have been good for anyone to even make a spinoff in the first place! But these particular spinoffs really take things to the next level, polishing the formula, improving on pretty much everything, and giving you a more enjoyable experience overall. I’m going to share some of my favorites, and I’m not listing them in any specific order.
1) The Sims

Will Wright’s city-building game, SimCity, first launched in 1989 and quickly became a beloved franchise. It remained popular throughout the 1990s and is still available on many devices today. Several spin-off games followed, with The Sims, released in 2000, becoming the most successful. The Sims rapidly gained popularity, eventually surpassing the original SimCity in terms of development and attention. This success isn’t surprising, as The Sims essentially recreates the experience of reality TV – a genre that was also becoming incredibly popular around the same time.
2) Mega Man X

The original Mega Man game wasn’t very successful when it first came out on the Nintendo Entertainment System. Luckily, Capcom gave it another chance, and Mega Man 2 became a huge hit that defined the series for years. Since then, many spin-off games have been released, and Mega Man X is often considered even better than the original. These spin-offs improved the graphics, added more fluid movement and tighter controls, featured a compelling story, and boasted a fantastic soundtrack. Mega Man X took everything that made the first Mega Man great and amplified it, ensuring the franchise thrived for years and delighted players around the globe.
3) World of Warcraft

I gotta say, the original Warcraft from 1994, Warcraft: Orcs & Humans, is a total classic and one of the most important real-time strategy games ever made. It was just so fun, fresh, and I couldn’t stop playing! Blizzard made a few sequels, but then they really hit it big with World of Warcraft in 2004. After that, the Warcraft series didn’t really need to be about RTS gameplay anymore. World of Warcraft just kept getting bigger and better with tons of updates and expansions for years. It’s easily one of the most influential games of the 21st century, and honestly, it’s way more complex and popular than anything that came before it.
4) Donkey Kong Country

The original Donkey Kong, released in 1981, was a turning point for Nintendo and a hugely influential game. It rescued the company from financial trouble, essentially created the platforming genre, and started a long-running series. While the original is a classic, Donkey Kong Country is widely considered the superior game. It reimagined Donkey Kong as a hero instead of a villain, and featured a compelling story, fantastic gameplay, and impressive graphics for its time. Many consider it one of the greatest games ever made, and it’s definitely the best in the Donkey Kong series, far surpassing its predecessor.
5) Portal

The original Half-Life games were groundbreaking and hugely influential, establishing Valve as a major force in the gaming world and delivering some all-time classics. While Portal, a spin-off series, is also fantastic, it feels more polished and offers a unique gameplay experience. It boasts improved controls and challenging puzzles that revolve around using a portal gun to solve spatial problems in a complex 3D environment. Sadly, like with Half-Life, Valve doesn’t often release new games in these series, but the titles that are available are truly exceptional.
Okay, I’m dying to know – what spinoff show or movie do you think actually tops the original? Seriously, which one is better? Let’s talk about it over in the ComicBook Forum – come share your pick and join the discussion!
