5 standout moments from Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer – from Zendaya return to dangerous new villains

Marvel and Sony successfully kept the details of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ a secret, which is rare for big comic book movies, and delivered a truly surprising experience for fans.

The new trailer for Spider-Man 4 just dropped and fans are thrilled, but it still leaves many wondering what’s in store for Tom Holland’s next solo adventure as the iconic hero.

Following the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Peter Parker (Tom Holland) finds himself completely on his own. A powerful spell cast by Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) has caused the world to forget he ever existed, leaving him to navigate life without anyone knowing who he is.

In a move that fans will appreciate, the story pulls the character away from the advanced technology and resources of Stark Industries, and instead focuses on him fighting more common criminals in his own community – a setup much closer to the original comic books.

After a hugely successful first three phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), things are looking bright for the future. Destin Daniel Cretton, the director of the popular Shang-Chi film, is now leading the franchise, taking over from director Jon Watts.

Welcome! If you’re looking forward to the new Spider-Man movie, you’ve come to the right place. We’ve analyzed the trailer and are sharing the most important highlights with expert commentary. Now, let’s count down the days until July!

1. Tom Holland and Zendaya reunite

For weeks, there’s been speculation about Tom Holland and Zendaya’s relationship, but they can now focus on something else: they’ll have a new topic to discuss when they next speak to the media.

This marks the long-awaited return of Peter Parker and MJ to the screen together. Their relationship ended tragically in No Way Home when Peter made a selfless choice to save the multiverse from collapsing.

Doctor Strange cast a spell to erase everyone’s memory of Peter Parker, successfully hiding his identity as Spider-Man. However, this also meant that even his friends and family no longer remembered him.

Peter is still clearly upset about losing MJ, while she seems to be thriving and genuinely happy at college. It’s tough to hear, to say the least.

Peter isn’t one to disappear for good, and it looks like he’s slowly starting to reconnect with her friends. The latest preview shows an uncomfortable reunion at a party, where they tentatively begin to talk again. The question is, will this bring back any forgotten memories?

2. What’s happening to Peter Parker?

What’s even more interesting is the idea that Peter is actually changing at a genetic level, similar to how spiders develop – at least, according to the story’s explanation. I can’t vouch for how scientifically correct that is, though.

Two scenes are likely to get people talking. The first shows Peter, wearing very little clothing, dangling from a building, held up only by a thin strand of webbing around his waist.

It’s interesting that he isn’t wearing his usual web-shooters on his wrists, and some fans think this might mean he’s developing the ability to create webs naturally, like Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man did – something Holland’s Peter Parker even discussed with Maguire’s version in ‘No Way Home’.

It seems these events are really affecting Pete, and later, he looks disturbingly at the camera with completely black and red eyes.

One possible explanation could be symbiote shenanigans.

As fans may recall, Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock briefly visited the Marvel Cinematic Universe and unknowingly left a small piece of the Venom symbiote there.

After the credits of Let There Be Carnage, Venom seemed really interested in a picture of Peter Parker – could that be a hint about future events? I’m beginning to suspect I’ve watched too many superhero movies if I’m even considering this.

3. Dangerous villains strike: The Scorpion, Boomerang and… The Hand?

A major mystery surrounding the new Spider-Man story, ‘Brand New Day,’ is who the primary villain will be. This trailer doesn’t reveal the answer, but it does introduce a few unexpected possibilities.

We get a quick fight scene between Spider-Man and Frank Castle, also known as The Punisher. While they don’t see eye-to-eye, The Punisher has become more of a complex, antiheroic character lately – like we’ve seen in the recent Daredevil: Born Again series – rather than a straightforward villain.

The trailer features brief appearances by some of Spider-Man’s lesser-known enemies, including Scorpion (played again by Michael Mando) and Boomerang (actor to be announced), who is shown throwing boomerangs at Spider-Man while flying.

Spider-Man fans will love these additions, as they focus on his everyday battles against crime – which is a big part of what makes the character so popular. However, these elements don’t immediately suggest a major, threatening villain for a big-budget movie.

Instead, a psychic or paranormal menace could fill that role…

A strange scene in the ‘Brand New Day’ trailer shows Spider-Man saving a woman from a car accident. Immediately after, it appears her mind somehow transfers into the body of a soldier in armor.

A mysterious figure grins at Spider-Man while possessing someone, then quickly leaps into another person nearby. As this happens, a voiceover (delivered by Tramell Tillman of Severance) cautions about a threat that’s both beyond our control and invisible.

Things just got more complicated: the dangerous ninja group known as The Hand – who we’ve seen before in Marvel’s Daredevil and The Defenders – seem to be back in New York City. This suggests the mysterious enemy our heroes are facing might be connected to demons or magic.

Who will play the villain remains one of the most intriguing questions surrounding Brand New Day.

4. Bruce Banner’s return is finally confirmed…

Mark Ruffalo’s return for Spider-Man: Brand New Day was rumored for a while, and he hadn’t officially confirmed it until now, so it’s great to finally have that settled.

Because of a spell cast by Doctor Strange, Bruce Banner doesn’t remember teaming up with Peter Parker during the battles in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. However, he does offer Peter some guidance about dealing with his unstable powers.

Mark Ruffalo had previously collaborated with Destin Daniel Cretton on Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, making a brief appearance after the credits with other popular Avengers characters.

This is the first time in a long while that Bruce Banner has fully changed back from his ‘Smart Hulk’ or ‘Professor Hulk’ form.

5. … but where is Sadie Sink?

While some actors from the Spider-Man: Brand New Day era haven’t been seen in recent projects, many Marvel fans are particularly interested in what Sadie Sink, known for her role in Stranger Things, is up to.

Honestly, the internet was buzzing with theories about which Marvel character this actor would play! Everyone was throwing out names – some thought it could be Black Cat, a sneaky burglar, while others hoped for Jean Grey, a powerful mutant. There were even guesses like Firestar, a superhero, or Gwen Stacy, a key character in Spider-Man’s life. It was wild seeing all the speculation!

Even after watching the trailer, it’s still unclear what role Sadie Sink will play. Could she be the mysterious being shown taking over different bodies and causing trouble at the beginning?

Could she be the person in the hood, turned away from the camera, who is confidently posing in front of a complex, modern setup with an unknown purpose?

We don’t have any answers yet, but expect lots of speculation and rumors to surface as the premiere of Brand New Day this summer approaches.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into cinemas on 31 July 2026.
