5 Star Wars Games That Deserve A Remake (And 5 Better Left In The Past)

As a huge Star Wars fan, I’ve played a lot of their games over the years, and honestly, they’ve been all over the place in terms of quality. Some retell the stories we already know and love from the movies, while others explore cool new corners of that galaxy far, far away. Now that Knights of the Old Republic – which is seriously one of the best Star Wars games ever made – is getting a remake, it got me thinking about which other games could really benefit from a modern update.

Some older Star Wars games could be greatly improved with updated technology, allowing for more detailed gameplay and storytelling. However, other titles have a special quality or don’t quite fit with the current Star Wars universe, and it’s best to leave them as they are. Here’s a look at five Star Wars games that would benefit from a remake, and which ones should remain untouched.

Deserves A Remake: Star Wars Episode I: Jedi Power Battles

Released during the original PlayStation era, Jedi Power Battles was a standout multiplayer action game that really deserves a remake. It cleverly combined fast-paced action with platforming challenges, and it was surprisingly difficult – players had to become skilled with their chosen Jedi character to succeed. While inspired by The Phantom Menace, the game offered a unique and exciting take on the Jedi experience for its time.

Even though Phantom Menace has been remastered, a full remake would be a great improvement. A remake could add more playable characters, introduce new enemies, and allow players to explore a wider range of Force powers. The original Jedi Power Battles was a solid action game that would really shine with the kind of expanded content a remake could offer.

Should Be Left Alone: Super Star Wars

The Super Star Wars trilogy is a famously challenging side-scrolling action game, and honestly, it doesn’t really need a remake. These games, which adapt the original Star Wars films, expanded on the story with extra levels. Levels like the Sandcrawler in Super Star Wars, Dagobah in The Empire Strikes Back, and Endor in Return of the Jedi were notoriously difficult to complete.

Super Star Wars is a fantastic game, but it definitely feels like a product of its time. Today’s games tend to be easier, and part of what made Super Star Wars so engaging was its difficulty. While a re-release or remaster would be welcome, there’s no need to completely remake it and alter the original experience.

Deserves A Remake: Star Wars: Rogue Squadron

The Rogue Squadron series is a classic Star Wars flight game known for its fast-paced, arcade-style gameplay. Over three installments, players could pilot a variety of ships, each offering a different way to play. With today’s technology, a remake of Rogue Squadron would be fantastic and is definitely deserved.

With improved visuals, new spacecraft, and more source material, developers could explore the core ideas in exciting new ways. Modern controls would make flying feel more precise, and the game would lend itself well to virtual reality. A new Rogue Squadron game could build on the strengths of Star Wars: Hunters by adding a compelling and enjoyable story campaign.

Should Be Left Alone: Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy

Today, Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy feels more like a piece of gaming history than a game that needs to be remade. It’s set within older Star Wars lore that’s largely been superseded by the current universe, focusing on a student at Luke Skywalker’s Jedi school. While innovative for its time, the basic action gameplay has been improved upon in more recent Star Wars titles.

Although Jedi Academy helped pave the way for games like Force Unleashed and Jedi: Fallen Order, releasing it now would feel unnecessary given those titles already exist. Furthermore, the story feels darker knowing Luke Skywalker’s Jedi school is ultimately destroyed by Kylo Ren. Any new player character in a remastered Jedi Academy would be affected by this established storyline, making their fate predetermined.

Deserves A Remake: Star Wars: Bounty Hunter

Star Wars: Bounty Hunter offered a fresh take on the Star Wars universe, showcasing the rougher side of the galaxy. The game featured solid gameplay that could have been built upon in future installments. Players take on the role of Jango Fett in a series of missions set before the events of Attack of the Clones. By expanding on the prequel era, the game explored a fascinating part of the Star Wars world that the movies and TV shows haven’t often shown.

A new version of the game could build on what worked well and really focus on the exciting idea of being a bounty hunter. Imagine a game world similar to Assassin’s Creed, where you complete missions by tracking down different targets, all while moving the story forward. Plus, it would be great to see more guns, jetpacks, and explosions – a nice change from the usual lightsaber battles.

Should Be Left Alone: Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire

When Shadows of the Empire first came out, it was a standout title because it greatly expanded the Star Wars universe. However, over time, other games have built upon its innovations and even improved upon them. This means that while a remake of Shadows of the Empire might be interesting, many of its special features are now found in more recent Star Wars games.

The game’s biggest draw – filling in the story between the original Star Wars movies – has already been explored in other places. Its main character, Dash Rendar, isn’t as complex as more recent heroes like Din Djarin from The Mandalorian. While Shadows of the Empire was interesting when it came out, it feels unnecessary now that the Star Wars universe has grown so much.

Deserves A Remake: Star Wars: Republic Commando

Set during the Clone Wars, Republic Commando is a team-based shooter that would be perfect for a modern remake. The original game was a fun, multiplayer experience that added interesting dimensions to the war. Considering how much the world has been developed since then, especially through the Clone Wars TV series, a new Republic Commando could build on that existing lore or recreate some of the war’s biggest and most thrilling battles.

With the success of team-based games like Helldivers and ARC Raiders, a remake of Republic Commando would be a great fit for today’s consoles. A new version could build on the original’s unique soldier classes and mission variety, creating an even more immersive experience. Giving Republic Commando a modern update, perhaps with inspiration from The Bad Batch, would be fantastic.

Should Be Left Alone: Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

The Force Unleashed games were a standout adventure during their time – exciting and gripping – but revisiting them now wouldn’t be a good idea. These games offered a unique look at the Star Wars galaxy through the story of Darth Vader’s hidden apprentice. However, fitting these characters and their relationships into the current Star Wars storyline would create significant conflicts and inconsistencies.

Games like Jedi: Fallen Order have built upon the gameplay of The Force Unleashed, making a remake unnecessary for most players. While Starkiller is an interesting character, his story is very specific and wouldn’t translate well to a new game. He’s also so powerful that he could disrupt the story and balance of a modern Star Wars game.

Deserves A Remake: Star Wars: Lethal Alliance

The action-adventure game Lethal Alliance, originally released on the PSP and Nintendo DS, deserves a modern remake thanks to its interesting concepts. The game centers around Rianna, a Twi’lek mercenary, and her droid companion, Zeeo, as they navigate events leading up to the discovery of the Death Star. By featuring a non-Force-sensitive character, the game cleverly expanded on the existing Star Wars story in a way that’s reminiscent of Rogue One.

As a fan, I’d love to see a remake of Lethal Alliance! I think it could really fit into what Andor and Rogue One were building, showing how everyday people played a part in the bigger rebellion. Plus, it was cool how much the story focused on tech and weapons, which is a nice change from a lot of other Star Wars stuff. A remake could really flesh out Rianna’s character and explore her as a more complex antihero. Honestly, Lethal Alliance felt a bit overlooked, and it deserves another look!

Should Be Left Alone: Star Wars: Masters of Teräs Käsi

Masters of Teräs Käsi is one of the most unusual Star Wars games ever made. While it wasn’t known for great gameplay, it did get attention simply because it was set in the Star Wars universe. However, its unremarkable mechanics mean it’s largely been forgotten. The game also takes some strange liberties with Star Wars lore, suggesting that ordinary people could challenge Jedi to duels – a concept that feels even more out of place now than it did at the time.

While Masters of Teräs Käsi holds a place in fans’ memories, it isn’t one of the strongest Star Wars games. A remake might sound good, but it would probably miss key parts of what makes Star Wars special, like the Jedi’s abilities. Although a Star Wars fighting game could work well, revisiting Masters of Teräs Käsi wouldn’t be the best approach.
