5 Things Marvel’s Age of Revelation Needs to Do to Become Successful

Marvel’s latest X-Men event, Age of Revelation, has launched a new alternate reality storyline in their mutant comics. While the title reminds some fans of the popular Age of Apocalypse from 1995 (which is celebrating its 30th anniversary), Marvel needs to ensure this new series feels fresh and avoids repeating past mistakes. The series began strongly in October 2025, establishing Douglas Ramsay as a remarkably powerful mutant – but his strength relies on the support of his followers, as he quickly defeated even formidable characters like Wiccan and Franklin Richards.

For Marvel’s Age of Revelation to be a hit, it’s crucial to sidestep some significant issues that could derail the X-Men series right from the beginning.

5) Age of Revelation Needs to Avoid Apocalypse

When the story of Age of Revelation began, Apocalypse was already present, waiting at his Autumn Palace when Professor X arrived seeking advice about Douglas Ramsay. Apocalypse later wished he had chosen Rictor instead of Ramsay. While he still rules his territories, it’s apparent he’s hesitant to directly confront Ramsay.

Look, I love the Age of Apocalypse and it’s awesome they’re marking its anniversary, but I really hope this new series doesn’t lean too heavily on Apocalypse himself. We don’t want everyone constantly comparing it to the original, so I think it’d be smart to keep him in the background, not as the main villain again. Honestly, there are so many other heroes they could focus on – and I’d love to see Cyclops take the lead, he’s been a bit overlooked lately.

4) The Time Travel Can’t Retread Days of Future Past

Early previews for the Age of Revelation storyline showed Cyclops explaining his plan to travel back in time and persuade his younger self to act differently, hoping to avoid the grim future they’re facing. This seems odd, since the X-Men generally believe altering the timeline isn’t possible. However, it probably means Cyclops isn’t just focused on saving their future, but on preventing Revelation from damaging other timelines as well.

However, it’s crucial this story doesn’t feel too much like Days of Future Past, where the X-Men previously traveled to the past to avoid a disastrous future. That storyline was relatively simple – the X-Men just had to stop an assassination attempt. This new story, Age of Revelation, needs to be much more complex, and things shouldn’t be straightforward. To truly stand out, Age of Revelation has to be a better and more memorable story than Days of Future Past.

3) Douglas Ramsay Has to Remain Powerful Throughout

For years, Douglas Ramsay was seen as a completely useless mutant. He had the incredible ability to understand and speak any language – whether it was human, alien, or even computer code. He didn’t initially realize he was different. Many readers disliked him because he came across as arrogant and boastful, and didn’t seem to earn their respect despite constantly talking a big game.

A shift occurred on Krakoa when Ramsay, the only one able to communicate with the island itself, took control. This attracted the notice of Apocalypse, who then selected Douglas as his heir. Douglas has become a powerful and unpredictable leader, and his strength is crucial. If he ultimately fails and reverts to being an ordinary mutant, the entire story of the Age of Revelation will be meaningless.

2) This Has to Make Cyclops Mean Something Again

The upcoming Age of Revelation storyline is expected to try and rehabilitate Cyclops’ image. He’s been a controversial figure for years, and since the establishment of Krakoa, he hasn’t done much to regain fans’ support. He desperately needs a chance to prove himself and become a true hero again, rather than remaining the disheartened leader he’s been since the fall of Krakoa.

If Cyclops is going to prevent the future seen in Revelation and save his timeline, he needs to embrace his heroic potential. A solo Cyclops comic series is planned for next year, and it’s a perfect opportunity to demonstrate why he deserves his own spotlight again.

1) The Ending Has to Make Real, Lasting Changes to the X-Men

The alternate timeline called Age of Revelation has seen significant events, including Wiccan losing his powers and Franklin Richards’ death. These events demonstrate just how powerful Douglas Ramsay has become. While the main Marvel Universe (Earth-616) will return to normal when this storyline concludes, there’s a feeling that the implications should be more far-reaching.

Events like the Age of Apocalypse and Days of Future Past significantly impacted the main Marvel universe (Earth-616). But these alternate-reality crossovers only matter if they create lasting changes. For a story like Age of Revelation to be remembered, it needs to alter the established world of Earth-616. Otherwise, it’s just another quickly forgotten crossover in a series of many each year.
