The Assassin’s Creed series is a huge name in gaming, with beloved titles like Assassin’s Creed II, Black Flag, and Odyssey. The latest game, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, continues that success, but previous attempts to adapt the franchise into movies, like the 2016 Assassin’s Creed film, haven’t fared well. Now, Netflix is creating a live-action Assassin’s Creed series, and here are five key elements it needs to get right to truly capture the spirit of the games.
5. When It Comes To Modern Day, Less Is More

A recurring point of disagreement among fans is the modern-day story, which has been woven into the series from the start. The games have shown that this storyline works best when used sparingly, but the 2016 movie didn’t follow that principle.
The film really emphasized its science fiction aspects, which felt relevant to today’s world. Though this sci-fi element initially draws you into the stories of characters from the past, the focus should then shift to their lives, relationships, and struggles – and thankfully, it does for the most part. Constantly returning to the present day disrupts the immersive experience and detracts from what’s truly captivating. Hopefully, the new series will avoid this issue and keep the focus where it belongs: on the characters and their stories.
4. Lean Into The Lore

Okay, so the whole Assassin’s Creed universe, for me, really revolves around this ancient war between the Templars and the Assassins. It’s the core of everything that happens in the games, the backstory to every character and storyline. They touched on it in the 2016 movie, but honestly, it felt like they didn’t give that central conflict nearly enough attention. It was a huge part of what makes the games so cool, and it just didn’t feel right in the film.
An Assassin’s Creed story naturally has built-in excitement and adventure thanks to its central conflict, but the last film didn’t deliver on that potential. Future installments could really draw viewers in by showing the history of past Assassins and Templars, and how their long-running conflict evolved. This approach also allows for interesting character interactions and development. However, to make this work, the series needs to fully embrace its established mythology, and hopefully that will happen going forward.
3. Moving Like Assassins

Fans of the games expect a fast-paced experience with stylish movement, like running and jumping across rooftops – a key feature of the series’ parkour. The new live-action show has the potential to be truly special if it captures that same energy and flair in both the action and the fighting.
The 2016 movie touched on this, but the new series should fully embrace dynamic movement. Imagine thrilling chases through bustling markets or across rooftops, or tense scenes of an Assassin following a Templar to discover their secret base. Utilizing parkour and vertical environments would greatly enhance the Assassin’s Creed experience and is essential for the upcoming series.
2. Assassins Need a Supporting Cast

Although the main Assassin character usually gets the most focus, the other characters are equally important. Games like Assassin’s Creed II, Brotherhood, Origins, Black Flag, and particularly Odyssey – which may have the best supporting characters in the entire series – demonstrate this well. These characters add a lot of depth to the main hero’s story, and truly enhance the overall sense of adventure if you take the time to get to know them.
Games in the Assassin’s Creed series are always stronger when the characters beyond the main hero are well-written and play important roles in the story. This holds true for any good movie or TV show – memorable supporting characters, whether they’re providing humor, heartwarming moments, or simply adding depth, always make the experience better.
1. A Fan-Favorite Protagonist

The Assassin’s Creed series has given us many memorable characters, and some have become truly iconic. While it’s appealing to introduce a brand new character, that’s not what the franchise needs to succeed on screen right now. With limited opportunities for a major film or TV series, Netflix should focus on a well-known and beloved character to ensure the project resonates with fans.
Here are a few great characters to consider: Ezio Auditore from Assassin’s Creed II, Brotherhood, and Revelations; Kassandra from Odyssey; and Edward Kenway from Black Flag. Other popular choices include Aveline (Liberation), Adéwalé (Freedom Cry), Bayek (Origins), and Jacob and Evie Frye (Syndicate).
Starting a series with a well-known lead character immediately establishes its overall style and atmosphere, and resonates with existing fans. It also provides a built-in cast of supporting characters, iconic scenes people want to see adapted, and a clear antagonist. By having these elements established from the beginning, the show can focus on developing the characters, exploring their relationships, and showcasing the rich mythology of the franchise – which could be crucial for its success on television.
