5 things the Dune: Part Three trailer revealed to us – from Paul and Chani’s child to Robert Pattinson’s new villain

Although Dune: Part Three isn’t scheduled to come out for another nine months, the first trailer has just been released, significantly increasing excitement for the final installment in Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi saga.

The trailer arrived shortly after several character posters were revealed on Tuesday, March 17th. These posters featured both familiar characters – including Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreidis and Zendaya as Chani – and exciting new cast members, like Robert Pattinson, who plays the villain Scytale and can change his shape.

This movie is based on the second book in Frank Herbert’s Dune series, Dune Messiah. It’s currently unknown how closely the film will follow the book’s storyline.

The new trailer gives us a much better idea of what’s coming – here are five key takeaways.

1. Paul and Chani are starting a family

The trailer begins with a tender scene of Paul and Chani talking about baby names, hinting that they are expecting a child.

“If it’s a girl, what should we call her?” Chani wondered. Paul replied that he’d like to name her Ghanima, explaining that she would need to be as resilient and powerful as her mother.

He then asked Chani what name they would give their son, and she replied, “I would name him Leto, so he could share his grandfather’s wisdom.”

2. Paul still has a lot of enemies – and there is all out war on Arrakis

The trailer opens with Paul observing that war only intensifies conflict, and this idea is visually supported by scenes of widespread violence and destruction throughout.

Later, he explains: “The more I fight, the more our enemies fight back.”

He clearly makes a lot of enemies, as we see massive armies clashing in several intense battle scenes. Based on this, the third movie appears to be just as large in scope as the earlier ones.

“I am not afraid to die,” Paul says at the end of the trailer. “But I’m not afraid to die… yet.”

3. Jason Momoa is back as Duncan Idaho

I was so relieved to see even a quick shot of Duncan Idaho in the trailer! Even though Jason Momoa’s character died in the first movie, I knew there had to be a way for him to return for the final film, and it looks like we’ll get to see him again – which I’m really excited about!

Readers of the book already know how he comes back, but this scene doesn’t reveal much for those who haven’t read it – we just see a quick fight.

4. Robert Pattinson’s new character looks chilling

Robert Pattinson is the biggest new name joining the cast of the third movie. He’ll play Scytale, a dangerous villain with the ability to change his appearance, who attempts to overthrow Paul.

The trailer only shows Scytale briefly, sporting bleached blonde hair, but it’s clear he’s a formidable character. At the very least, he has a remarkably intimidating stare.

5. Lady Jessica seems disapproving of her son

This week, it was revealed that Rebecca Ferguson will appear in just one scene as Lady Jessica in the movie, though it seems like it could be a significant moment.

In the trailer, Paul seeks guidance from his mother, wondering how his father managed to accomplish something.

She sharply replied, “Your father didn’t begin this war.” It’s clear she’s holding him accountable for the current violence, implying he’s responsible for it all.
