The first season of ‘Welcome to Derry’ concludes in a way that significantly alters the established ‘IT’ movie universe and strongly suggests a second season is necessary. While viewers knew Pennywise couldn’t be truly destroyed – the show is set 27 years before the original ‘IT’ film – the finale still delivered a shocking and violent ending, leaving many questions about what’s to come. (Please be aware that this contains spoilers for the final episode of Season 1.)
The movie IT: Welcome to Derry ends with the Losers Club seemingly defeating Pennywise, but it’s clear he’ll return. The film hints at a long and brutal history of this evil entity in the town of Derry, and reveals that Pennywise can actually see into the past and future. This ability could be very important if a second season of Welcome to Derry is made, potentially impacting events long before or after the story we’ve already seen.
5) IT: Welcome to Derry Hasn’t Been Renewed For Season 2 (Yet)

As of today, HBO hasn’t officially announced whether there will be a second season of IT: Welcome to Derry. This is a bit unexpected, considering the show’s strong debut – it was the third-highest premiere ever for HBO, following The Last of Us and House of the Dragon. Both of those shows were quickly renewed, so it seems logical that this Stephen King prequel would be too. While HBO isn’t making a decision immediately, a renewal is still the most probable outcome, particularly since the creators have discussed ideas for future seasons and a planned three-season arc. Hopefully, with the first season finished, we’ll have an answer soon.
4) IT: Welcome to Derry Season 2 Will Be Set In 1935

The series Welcome to Derry is set in 1962, and the story follows a repeating 27-year cycle. This means the events of IT happen in 1989, and IT: Chapter Two takes place in 2016. However, the show is hinting at a different approach: moving the timeline backwards instead of forwards. This would take Season 2 to 1935, the cycle before the one we’ve seen. If the show continues, Season 3 would be set in 1908, revealing the first encounter between It and Bob Gray, and the very first appearance of Pennywise.
3) IT: Welcome to Derry Season 2’s Story

A major event from the second season of IT: Welcome to Derry has been revealed: the brutal killing of the Bradley Gang. While hinted at in the show’s closing credits, this event also appears in Stephen King’s original novel and was briefly referenced in the IT films. It’s expected to be a significant and heartbreaking moment, much like the destruction of The Black Spot was in the first season.
The Bradley Gang was a group of robbers who operated in Derry and were killed in a violent shootout. Witnesses at the scene reported seeing a clown, and it seems likely that this event, much like the Black Spot incident, was fueled by the fear and tension of the Great Depression, as well as Pennywise’s influence. The clown seen may even be the same person as before – Ingrid Kersh, who appeared in an earlier episode.
We already know Kersh was in Derry back in 1935, thanks to flashback scenes showing her working at Juniper Hill asylum. There, she encountered Pennywise and mistakenly thought it was her father. Considering how significant the character has become – highlighted by the finale’s epilogue which brought back Joan Gregson to play her, alongside Sophia Lillis as Beverly – it’s almost certain we’ll learn much more about her story, especially given her connection as the daughter of Bob Gray.
2) IT: Welcome to Derry Season 2 Will Need A Mostly New Cast

One of the best parts of ‘Welcome to Derry’ was its cast, particularly the young actors. However, most of them will need to be replaced for the second season. Bill Skarsgård is expected to return as Pennywise, as he’s become strongly associated with the character through the movies and the show, and he’s also a producer on the series. Another actress who might reappear is Tyner Rushing, who played Ingrid in the 1935 scenes. She’s a seasoned actress with roles in shows like ‘For All Mankind,’ ‘Under the Banner of Heaven,’ and ‘Stranger Things,’ suggesting the creators may have plans to bring her character back.
With nearly three decades having passed, it’s unlikely many original actors will return. However, we can expect to see some recognizable characters back in Derry, potentially including Stanley Kersh, Rose, and Clint Bowers. Rose and Clint, especially, could play significant roles, revisiting their past encounters with Pennywise and the police corruption. The story will likely also introduce new characters with familiar last names – relatives of the original Losers Club – as the narrative explores the lasting impact of trauma across generations.
1) When Could IT: Welcome to Derry Season 2 Be Released?

Even though HBO hasn’t officially announced a second season of IT: Welcome to Derry, a new season is likely still a ways off. Filming probably wouldn’t begin until at least the second half of 2026, meaning we might not see the new episodes until around Halloween 2027. However, if filming gets delayed into late 2026 or even 2027, the release could be pushed to 2028, especially considering the show relies heavily on visual effects. Long waits are common for big shows on networks like HBO, so fans will need to be patient.
All episodes of IT: Welcome to Derry Season 1 are available to stream on HBO Max.
