5 Things We Need to See From Dungeons & Dragons in 2026

The complete list of new books and boxed sets for Dungeons & Dragons coming in 2025 has been released. However, beyond the Warlock trailer shown at The Game Awards, we don’t know much about future plans for the game. This is typical, as Wizards of the Coast usually shares its yearly plans in January or February. Still, many fans – including myself – are already thinking about what we’d like to see from Dungeons & Dragons in 2026.

The last year was a period of trying new things for Dungeons & Dragons. Now that the rule changes for 2024 are released, Wizards of the Coast published several new books that took some interesting and unexpected directions. I encourage this experimentation and hope to see even more fresh ideas in 2026. Here’s what I’d like to see in the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons books and related materials next year.

5) The Honor Among Thieves Sequel

I doubt it will happen, but I really hope Wizards of the Coast announces a sequel to this amazing movie someday. It perfectly captures everything I enjoy about the tabletop role-playing game, and I’d love to see the story continue.

While I might not get exactly what I’m hoping for, I think we could see news about a TV adaptation on Netflix in 2026. It won’t be a direct sequel to Honor Among Thieves, but I’m hoping it captures a similar feel.

4) A Confirmed Release Date for Warlock

Currently, Warlock is planned to come out sometime in 2027, meaning it won’t be released in 2026. I’m hoping we get a more precise release date soon, as games without firm dates often get pushed back. While a date isn’t a promise, a general timeframe like ‘2027’ makes me worry about delays. Hopefully, after the gameplay reveal, we’ll learn exactly when Warlock will be available.

3) Expanded 5e Class Options

The latest update to Dungeons & Dragons includes revised versions of the classes from the existing 5th edition. Considering that edition is now a decade old and only added one new class – the Artificer – which has now been updated, it’s time for D&D 5e to introduce some fresh class options.

Playtesting indicates that Wizards of the Coast is developing at least one new character class for 5th Edition Dungeons & Dragons. A Psion class was planned for their Unearthed Arcana playtest material in 2025, and it’s likely to appear in the game by 2026. However, I hope they add more full classes, not just options within existing classes. I’d especially love to see a dedicated Witch class, similar to the one found in the Pathfinder roleplaying game.

2) More Robust Setting Lore Books Like Heroes of Faerun

The upcoming 2025 Dungeons & Dragons sourcebooks included some exciting titles, but Heroes of Faerun really stood out. This player’s guide is a fantastic resource, offering helpful information for both character creation and important moments throughout a campaign.

I’m hoping to see more detailed sourcebooks like this one released in 2026, but for campaign settings beyond the Forgotten Realms. These books would give Dungeon Masters and players the rich background information they need to create truly immersive and believable stories.

1) A New, Fully-Fledged Campaign Book

This year, there weren’t any brand-new, full-length adventure books released. Instead, Wizards of the Coast has been focusing on collections of smaller adventures, like Dragon Delves and Adventures in Faerun. While these collections can be helpful, they require a lot of work for Dungeon Masters who want to create a traditional, connected campaign.

By 2026, I’m hoping for a full, new Dungeons & Dragons campaign, rather than just collections of smaller adventures. There’s been some talk and early materials hinting at a return to the Dark Sun setting, and it would be fascinating to see how that world could be updated for today’s game. Ultimately, I’d like to see a big, ready-to-play story for Dungeon Masters who don’t want to create their own campaigns from scratch.
