5 Time Capsule Game of Thrones Episodes That Perfectly Capture the Early Thrones Magic

Look, I was a huge fan of *Game of Thrones*, and it really bothered me how the last season went down. For seven seasons, they were masters of juggling tons of different plots, but then suddenly, when everyone ended up in the same place, it just felt…off. It was like characters, even Daenerys, started losing focus right when they were about to achieve everything they’d been working towards. And honestly, it felt like the show started holding back, afraid to make any truly bold choices. That wasn’t what made *Game of Thrones* great in the beginning! Thankfully, we still have all those amazing early seasons to enjoy, and that’s what I keep going back to.

Even though the final season of *Game of Thrones* disappointed many viewers, the show still has incredible moments worth experiencing. Here are five episodes that truly showcase the magic of *Game of Thrones* at its best.

5) Season 1, Episode 9, “Baelor”

In the next-to-last episode of *Game of Thrones* Season 1, Robb Stark achieves a victory against the Lannisters, rescuing his father’s captor, Jaime Lannister. But this win feels hollow because, despite agreeing to Joffrey Baratheon’s terms, Ned Stark is executed in King’s Landing. Ned’s death is arguably the show’s most memorable moment, and it powerfully establishes the series’ grim and unpredictable nature.

4) Season 4, Episode 2, “The Lion and the Rose”

Even before Ned Stark’s death, Joffrey was a deeply unpleasant character, and killing such a beloved figure only made him more hated. He finally gets his comeuppance in Season 4, Episode 2, “The Lion and the Rose,” when he’s poisoned during his own wedding to Margaery Tyrell. His mother, Cersei Lannister, immediately accuses his uncle, Tyrion, of the murder. Though *Game of Thrones* often subverts expectations, Joffrey’s death is perfectly satisfying and impactful.

3) Season 3, Episode 9, “The Rains of Castamere”

The episode “The Rains of Castamere” (Season 3, Episode 9) is largely responsible for the reputation of weddings as frightening events in *Game of Thrones*. Robb Stark and his army go to the Twins expecting a friendly reception, but Walder Frey and Roose Bolton have betrayed them, resulting in a massacre of the Northern forces. This episode perfectly exemplifies *Game of Thrones*’ knack for shocking twists and is arguably the most impactful in the show’s early seasons.

2)Season 4, Episode 6, “The Laws of God and Men”

In the episode “The Laws of God and Men,” Tyrion is wrongly put on trial for Joffrey’s murder. Though a deal exists to send him to the Night’s Watch if convicted, he’s devastated when Shae testifies against him. Peter Dinklage gives an unforgettable performance as Tyrion confronts his family and the citizens of King’s Landing. The episode culminates with Tyrion demanding a trial by combat, solidifying its place as a standout moment in the series.

1) Season 1, Episode 1, “Winter Is Coming”

Unlike many shows that start slowly, *Game of Thrones* immediately grabs your attention. The first episode, while more subdued than later ones, still establishes a captivating world and introduces the many memorable characters of Westeros. It ends with a shocking moment – Jamie Lannister pushing Bran Stark from a window to conceal an affair – and that alone is enough to draw viewers in. If that doesn’t hook you, nothing will!

Game of Thrones is streaming on HBO Max.
